The match against Costa Rica will be the fourth match in the Fourth round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. USA currently top the 6-team group, and will take on the runners-up Costa Rica, just one point less than USA’s 7 points, at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in Costa Rica. They have the golden opportunity to move 4 points ahead of their challengers for the top-spot, but a loss would be devastating. This makes tonight’s match a very tricky one for the Stars and Stripes, whose sole objective is to reach the 2010 World Cup, to be held in South Africa.
The United States will face the Costa Ricans again at home on the 14th October, later this year, hoping that by then, they would have clinched the top spot and assured their presence in the important worldwide football event. USA’s summer is very busy, as they are participating in the Confederations Cup as well as the Gold Cup. We will keep you updated on how USA fares in these competitions, as well at their push for qualification from the CONCACAF qualifiers. Until now, they are the only team that has not lost in the qualifying group, and keeping this record puts them with a very good chance of taking the plane to South Africa.
The squad out of which headcoach Bob Bradley must pick his line-up consists of:
Goalkeepers: Guzan, Howard
Defenders: Bocanegra, Bornstein, Califf, DeMerit, Hejduk (injured), Onyewu, Pearce, Spector, Wynne
Midfielders: Adu, Beasley, Bradley, Clark, Edu (injured), Feilhaber, Mastroeni, Kljestan, Torres
Forwards: Altidore, Ching, Davies, Dempsey, Donovan
Landon Donovan is expected to be the star player, being the player with the most caps (out of all players who have not retired from the USA national team) as well as all-time all-player top scorer, with 37 goals.
