Alan Pardew is not the man to lead Newcastle United to Europe
Newcastle United look to be in contention for qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. However, despite an exhilarating start to the 11/12 season, Mike Ashley should sack (yet) another manager to improve their odds, a decision which should inflict less discontent from the Toon fans than renaming their home stadium.
The Magpies collected 25 points from 11 games prior to their first defeat at the Etihad Stadium. A consistent lineup including exciting signings such as the 16-goals-in-21-games Demba Ba and French orchestrator Cabaye, not to exclude the impressive young Tim Krul, all contributed to an amazing lift in team morale and league position. However we all know that unless ‘accumulated fatigue’ and ‘injuries’ are not checked, you can’t play the same lineup for all 38 games.
Alan Pardew, like Harry Redknapp, does not like to make many changes in lineup. They too don’t make many substitutions; but the quality and squad depth of the two teams are incomparable. Sir Alex has long been an advocate of squad rotation. Not only does it keep your squad match fit, the competition for a starting place gets the better out of your players. Jose Mourinho is also known to be relentless in taking off underperforming players whatever the match time, if he feels his team could turn the match around.
At Craven Cottage, Newcastle forfeited a 0-1half time lead and ended up the match losing 5-2. (Un)fortunate for Fulham, Sidwell’s injury near half time prompted a change of formation from 451 to 442. With Andrew Johnson coming on and Bryan Ruiz making way for the defensive Chris Baird, Fulham’s gameplan was obvious – direct and counter. In spite of a dominating first half, the Newcastle manager made minimal, if any, tactical changes to deal with the new Fulham side and the less defensive Ben Arfa – albeit scoring his side’s 2nd goal – and Guthrie-Cabaye midfield were never ready to fend off the Cottagers’ desperate attack on away ground. Pardew only sent James Perch on in a less competent defensive midfielder position in place for Guthrie when the score was 4-1.
Recently at White Hart Lane, a first half blitzkrieg put Spurs 4-0 up and Newcastle United never looked like staging another 4-4 comeback. The less defensive Gabriel Obertan started on the right and Guthrie and Perch sit opposite to Modric and Marker in midfield with Demba Ba and new signing Papiss Demba Cisse leading the attack in an ambitious lineup. As expected, Pardew once again did minimal, if any, tactical changes before brining on the inexperienced Shan Ferguson for Obertan in the second half.
In both hammering results, Pardew completely overestimated his side and it was quite obvious he did not have a plan B. As a manager he might be good at maintaining a good relationship with his players but as a tactician, he has never looked like one capable of leading the decent Magpies squad into Europe. With less than 15 games to play, they still have fixtures against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City and if Pardew continues to be sluggish and slow, and in charge, don’t be surprised to see Newcastle eventually slipping down to the bottom half of the table.

who writes this $hite. seriously. is it steve bruce? are you steve bruce?
mmmmm mince pie.
You didn’t mention the 3-0 against Man Utd. How did his tactics fair that day?
Nufc will finish in the top 8 and Pardew has played a big part in that.
Let’s reconvene at the end of the season and see who’s right…
Silly Boy!!!
another moronic point of view from someone who doesn’t watch and follow the club regularly and forgets to take into account other influences at the time , like players available for selection and player form at the time .
had this been someone worthy of giving an opinion , you would have noted the lack of depth in the squad admitted by all and the gallant job done by squad players when called upon in wins either side of these defeats , he’s got the team punching above their weight , and with reinforcements in the summer a proper push on the european spots can be made .
the writer of this article would have been one of the same people to suggest we were doomed for relegation this season.
when all fit , our first 11 is a match for anyone in the premiership , outside of that we need more depth , any toon fan would be able to tell you this .
What a massive waste of yours and my time.
Who should lead us to Euro glory then eh? Mourino? Fergie? Christopher Columbus?
Congratulations on 2012′s most pointless article.
you boy are an ar$e
I have to ask myself why did I read this dribble. What a load of shite! Pardew is definitely the manager to take us to Euorpe you fool!! Look at the table he’s our best manager since Sir Bobby (including the dodgy media!).
*I meant to say including the way he handles the media. He’s up against clowns like the one that wrote this ridiculous article.
This has got to be THE worst article ive read in a long time.
What a crock of shite! Perch was the only available midfielder! 4 mins of my life i wont get back after reading that
I completely agree with the article and you abusers are, to say the least, deluded.we have played a load of crap lately but have still managed some points which suggests to me we are carrying a lot of luck. When this luck runs out as against spurs and second half fulham the inevitable happens.anyone who plays best and ameobi as a strike force is asking for trouble, remind me how many goals have these jokers scored.
So many good points made… Not in the article, by everyone commenting on this abysmal piece of $hit!

Didn’t mean to upset your bird pal. I’m sure she knows loads about football really. :/
This is a laughably bad article, Pardew has done a remarkable job with limited resources and to say you wouldn’t be surprised to see us finish in the bottom half of the table by losing our 12 point gap in just 13 games shows just how stupid you are. The fact you say “less than 15 games to go” rather than stating there are 13 games to go suggests that you are desperately trying to give your argument a bit more weight and make it seem more plausible by writing rubbish rather than facts. What about taking 4 points off Man United this season? What about when Pardew threw Shola on and he got a late equaliser against Spurs earlier in the season? And as for Mourinho being relentless in hauling off under performing players, Pardew hurled the underperforming Demba Ba off for “inexperienced” Sammy Ameobi in the league cup against Scunthorpe and what happened? Sammy scored an extra time winner. If you are going to put articles out online make sure you take all the facts into account rather than just writing some half baked bullshit because you will be found out for what you are, an idiot. In my eyes the only thing Pardew is guilty of is having a go at teams and as a Newcastle fan I wouldn’t have it any other way, win lose or draw we are always entertaining.
bollox wrote by a retard.
So your baseing Newcastle’s seaon on two results? If that is the case you could start looking at Spurs defeat at home to Man City or Man Utd’s defeat to Newcastle and Man City, Arsenal’s early defeat to Man Utd; you would have a lot of very able managers out of work! Like most other people commenting on here I think your views are way off you should be embarrassed. I sincerely hope you don’t get paid for wriying this sort of rubbish!?
It is articles like these which make you wish that you never learnt how to read.
Lucky there is only one or two of these fools around the world although it is such a shame that the Internet has given them a public domain.
clown
I can't believe you even bothered to write this shite…
I agree………..
With all of the people who have posted that is (bar one nugget of course).
Marshy – get a had of ya sell kid, you little cock chop.
I really hope ‘the linesman’ is not getting paid for this. You my boy are either a mackem or a cockney i.e obsessed with all things NUFC.
Dellusional Toon fans will disagree with u but u are more right than wrong and people are just failing to admit the honest truth. If only we can see their faces end of season. Apart from the UTD game i am yet to see real proper TACTICAL expertise from Pardew
yesman>
How about the Stoke game? the Arsenal 4-4 game? the Spurs 2-2 game even?
Your analysis based on FIFA is it?
You really are a yesman-agreeing with everything even the bollox he’s wrote.
thelinesman as he calls himself is obviously a twat. stop writing this crap and get back to the stadium of shite u muppet.
Bottom line is…we are only 1 point of 4th after 25 games. That does not happen by accident! Credit where it's due! Pards and co are working wonders. What is it with these 'fans' who moan when we are in the Championship (fair enough) but then moan when we are in a very good position? There's no pleasing some…
What is this nonsense, absolutely ridiculous opinions
Did you just fart and this was your follow through? Can't believe I just wasted a minute of my life reading this shit!
Sorry Linesman but I agree with the majority of reviewers here – you need to do some research first. As said above, there are strange and mitigating losses for many good teams, and without delving deeper into the context of the team situation at the time, you will invariably end up with this specious tosh. I would first try writing about a team/subject that you have knowledge or love of first so that you can learn a bit about objectivity. Then, you may write an article that I would not have to consider suing you for lost time.
TheLinesman
Can I assume this is a windup piece? To believe that the Newcastle Utd would benefit from the dismissal of another manager with no mention of a potential replacement is absurd. The squad isn’t the largest and lacks the kind of strength in depth that the other clubs at the very top of the PL enjoy. That the club are in the league position they are is a testament to the man management of Pardew and hard work of the players and strong team spirit that has been fostered. Aside from a half dozen high quality players, such as Krul, Coloccini, Cabaye, Tiote, Ba and S Taylor, many others have played to the maximum of their ability to help the club to it’s current position. Pardew deserves credit for this.
The selection of the Fulham and Spurs matches illustrates selection bias – the Fulham game was a game of two halves, dominated by Newcastle in the first half without a killer blow. Jol deserves credit for the tactical changes in the second. The Spurs game was a heavy defeat inflicted by a better side. I note there is no mention of the superb tactical master class from Pardew in the 3-0 home win over Man Utd. Pardew completely out manoeuvred SAF with his tactics and his team were superb. Perhaps you should think more carefully before you write these pieces as to not make yourself sound ignorant and ridiculous.
Commented angrily on this – bizarre piece which reads like a wind up attempt. TheLinesman a M*ckem?
i sort of agree, i believe martin oneill would be the best choice, BUT pards is doing an awesome job for the situation.
Utter utter nonsense article.
Gay!
Article writer – die
Are you taking the piss? We beat Man Utd, we’ve drawn with Arsenal, we lost undeservedly to Chelsea, and City smashed us. Thats 4 point won, 8 dropped and 9 lost
we have Liverpool at home, City at home, bound to be more points. Chelsea away and theyre inconsistent.
Your job to doubt us and it’s our job to prove you wrong !!
your opinion is based on flannel juice and gibberish since when have we been in this position at this time of the season Pards is doing a great job probably why he is mentioned for the england job and you should be spraying with tins of red and white paint on shit house walls in blunderland you uneducated clown
What an absolute crock of shite!!! …never read such bollocks …..utter tripe!
Well, I would say if the author was wanting feed back he’s got it…never seen an article with so many replies..I just don’t know what the author was thinking when he wrote this. If you only deconstruct two games, then of cause you’ll see bad decisions, you have to deconstruct all games and all decisions to get a balanced view. To want to sack a manager who has his team in 5th, one point from 4th is ridiculous. The next time you write something read it through and then deleted it and then go and do something else in stead.
Thanks everyone for the comments. As thelinesman always says, comments and opinions are always welcomed.
We did research before writing. But it’s our mistakes of not making the article of more comprehensive. We will respond here then.
vs Tottenham: Good match. I agreed Ameobi’s wonderful strike earned the point. That was a good move, and bear in mind that is the only league goal scored by Ameobi so far.
vs Manutd (H): Manutd was in complete control before Demba’s strike. 3-0 looked a huge margin but Newcastle fans should know that was not that one-sided match. It was still good three points.
vs Manutd (A): Controversial penalty + strings of world-class save (+1 very lucky one) by Tim Krul.
Our main point is, given limited resources, Pardew is doing a reasonably good job, especially in maintaining the morale of the team. But if newcastle wants to progress further, he does not have the tactical mind to carry them forward.
ooooooommmmmmmmmmggggggggggg
how can u hate someone with lovely specs
Kackie!
All i here is UTD game UTD game. Toon has won 12 games so fa..some of these include: Wolves, QPR, Blackburn (A), Wigan, Sunderland just ba mention a few…games which were won by luck and fine so be it . Pardew has ridden his luck but the Author is jus sayin tha u need to knw luck wont last long and when an Opposition manager has responded Pardew alwez failed to counter tactics countless times. He has a single mindset and is unable to adjust to counter tactics and have a plan B. His led d lads 2 6th now bt has no calibre to maintain that and his CV is there for all to see…..its hard i knw to hear but tha d truth 24-7!!
The only fact that should matter is… Newcastle are the only team inside the top 7 that hasn’t spent millions upon millions on players over the last 3 years.
I admit that I was sceptical when Ashley sacked Houghton, sold/released Carroll, Nolan, Barton + Enrique. But look at the players that have replaced them, Cabaye, Ba, Cisse and Santon are at least of the same quality and they cost us approx 20-25 million less than we sold them for and they are much more professional players!
I have never been more proud of a Newcastle team (both league position and the attitude and belief of the team).
Toon Toon!!!
Ditto!!! Muppets
This article is total wank and written by a complete tool, dickhead.
Pure comedy. talk about having an agenda and a bloody great big axe to grind. Don’t think you’re from S*nderland as you wouldn’t be that bitter having MON now. I might be wrong though. Whoever you are you are you a) exceedingly jealous/bitter and b)should pin your colours to the mast. But c) probably have no cajones. pity, could have had a good laugh.
Fortunately i don’t visit this fermenting bowl of tripe that often. my mistake, will be more careful with news now links in future.
The bloke has a point or several
HBA is played regularly or sparsely ?
Defensively we’re improving or deteriorating ?
Pardew has won 1 of 16 matches against the top six (unless you include his first game against Liverpool)
Members of the oon Army are the most blinkered because they’re more desperate for success yet more naive when it comes to having shlte showered on them !
Come on, pardew has earnt a shot..!!!
Ohhh no no no no, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you know what else is? A manager who plays to his strengths and gets the best out of his (some would say average) players by instilling confidence. Wouldn't it be lovely to to have an extravagant, multi million pound squad to rotate constantly like sir Alex, who is of late, beginning to get it wrong. Anyway, I've already wasted enough virtual ink on this, hopefully the end result of the season has made you think twice before commenting on something you clearly know nothing about.
