There are many rumours doing the rounds that Christian Benítez, the 23 year old Ecuadorian striker, could be on his way to Birmingham City for what would turn out to be a record transfer fee for the West Midlands club.
Rumours state that Blues have tabled a bid of around £6.2 million for the player, with a further £3 million in add-ons, and if true, that would make Benítez Birmingham’s record signing, ahead of Emile Heskey.
For those who know little about Benítez, he plays for the Mexican side Santos Laguna, and has a tremendous scoring record. He is 5 ft 6, and has all the pace and power required to hack it in the Premier League. He has scored 14 times in 18 games for his club side this season, he has also been brilliant for his national side, for whom has has scored 10 in 17 appearances.
The club have refused to comment on reports linking them to the transfer, but local media outlets have reported that the club’s hierarchy were angry that news of the deal was leaked to the media by the player’s agent.
While news of the possible signing will interest many Bluenoses, the overriding effect will be joy and amazement at the fact that Blues are doing all they can in their bid to survival…even spending big money.
The future looks bright for the Blues, and you never know, by next August, there could be two Benítez’s in the Premier League. Move over Rafa…
