Bielsa Cautious Despite Win

22 June 2010 by

Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa remained cautious about his side’s World Cup chances yesterday, despite admitting that he was pleased with their performance in beating Switzerland 1-0.

Despite taking a maximum six points from their opening two matches, Bielsa was keen to point out that Chile still need a point from their final game to ensure progression from Group H.

“We were in possession of the ball for most of the match and we had lots of goalscoring opportunities, but scored only one goal. But I think the victory was deserved.

Qualification is not yet secured and we have to fight for it with the same enthusiasm we have up to now” he said

That final game is against Spain on Friday. The Spaniards beat Honduras shortly after Chile’s own victory to rekindle their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Despite Spain’s return to winning ways and the fact his side need only a point to qualify, Bielsa dismissed any thoughts that he should abandon his attacking style. While the European Champions play a similar passing game, Chile will seek to meet fire with fire.

“Friday you will see exactly the same again, because from where I am standing it is the best way of trying to take on and better your opponents” the coach said.
