Blackburn Rover’s Henning Berg….a fans pacifier or a credible appointment

1 November 2012 by
Wednesday night Blackburn Rovers owners Venky’s announced former player Henning Berg as the new manager at Blackburn Rovers after Steve Kean’s resignation.
Berg is a Rovers legend as a player, part of the 94-95 Premier League winning side and then after a very successful spell at United part of the first Blackburn Rovers side to win the League Cup in 2001/02.
Since retiring after a spell at Glasgow Rangers, Berg has managed Lyn and Lillestrøm in Norway neither to any great success if the truth be told.
His time at Lyn passed without any real success and was dismissed from Lillestrøm after a couple of mid table finishes so what qualifies him to take on the task of returning Blackburn to the Premiership.
Questions must be asked why the Blackburn board have appointed Berg when managers with promotion credentials were out there, such as McCarthy, Coyle, Davies and Keane.
The cynics will say Berg is an appointment to pacify the Rovers fans and to try and bring back the fans to Ewood Park as he is one of the golden boys, it seemed that the board wanted an ex-player for the fans rather than an experienced, expensive manager who would do it ‘his way’.
His plus side is he not new to the club, all be it the Venky’s may of changed it from the Jack Walker days, and he is respected by the fans as a player.
Whether he has the tactics at this level, can he cope with interference from above and can he build a relationship with the Venky’s after this comment, “There are no real managers with credibility who would accept a job like that” remains to be seen….will Berg live to regret that comment, who knows….but he has a real opportunity at Rovers.
