Chelsea have officially confirmed that they have reached an agreement to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax this summer, subject to the Moroccan agreeing to personal terms.
“Chelsea Football Club has reached an agreement with Ajax to sign Hakim Ziyech this summer. The move is subject to the player agreeing personal terms and he will remain at the Dutch club for the rest of this season,” a statement read on the club’s official website
The Morocco international has been impressive for Ajax over the past couple of years and he enjoyed his best spell during the previous campaign where he contributed 19 goals and 16 assists in the Eredivisie and European games.
His form helped Ajax reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League but the Amsterdam outfit could not make it to the final at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano after a dramatic defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on away goals.
In the current season, Ziyech has been similarly impressive with eight goals and 16 assists. Two of those assists came during the thrilling 4-4 draw against Chelsea in the Champions League group stage where Ajax were down to nine men for the final quarter of the game.
With Ziyech’s anticipated arrival, there will definitely be doubts regarding the future of experienced forward Willian, who has been unable to finalise a new long-term contract with the west London club.
The Brazil international has regularly stated that he would prefer to extend his stay with the Blues but at present, there has been no resolution and he could leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in June 2020.
Apart from Willian, Pedro and Olivier Giroud are among the other first-team players, whose contracts are scheduled to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign.
