What direction do Arsenal take now?

21 February 2012 by

It’s been made clear that there is a clear divide amongst Arsenal fans, for and against Wenger. Surely if Arsenal beat Chelsea to the final top four position then this season will be somewhat a good season, but….. could it all have been so different? Who do you blame? Board or Manager?

If Arsenal had reinvested the money from the sales of Nasri and Fabregas into Mario Gotze and Juan Mata, how would this season have panned out, now a lot of you will be sitting there thinking why didn’t Wenger do this! why doesn’t he spend money! Take this into account, the board have a tight wage structure, they will not let Wenger offer more than 80k a week, the reason, Phil Jones, Juan Mata and Ashley Young did not sign for Arsenal, so please can someone explain to me who Wenger signs that will change the team that will take under 80k a week and won’t get better offers elsewhere, in the current climate 80k a week really is not that much if you’re a top four side.

How can Arsenal change this? Why us? you may be thinking, well the board believe that all first team players deserve near the same wages, so players like, Chamakh, Squillaci, Diaby, Rosicky, Djourou, Park, Almunia, Fabianski are all sitting on extremely high wages. Van Persie is on around 60k a week and Rosicky on around 55k a week, how does that work? I’m asking now, because how in my opinion the best striker in the world can be on basically the same wage as a average midfielder at the same club is beyond me.

Surely if Arsenal sold all the dead wood and we all know what players they are, they will shift around 400k a week of wages maybe even more, enough to offer Van Persie a big contract, sign two world class players, Eden Hazard and Mario Gotze rings a bell get another defender, Jan Vertonghen and a back up striker who is reliable, that i’m not to sure of, but thats spending what 75m? which sounds a lot but there will be a lot of departures this summer. Personally I would like to see Theo Walcott leave, he has a good game once in a blue moon and there would be a lot of interested parties and I think he would gain a 20m transfer fee.

Obviously I sound like a typical fan telling his team what should be done, but personally I feel it all makes sense, a more potent attack with a better end product and a much more reliable defence, no brainer in my opinion. We will see but I feel all the blame should be taken off Wenger unless you can think off a world class player who would join for under 80k a week? I highly doubt your could.

I would like to hear who you would like to be signed? and who to be sold. Thanks for reading opinions are very welcome.

What has your title to do with your article which is the usual boring transfer bla bla? Re salaries; eg when Rosicky signed, he was a pretty good midfielder, little Mozart and all that; that was what his salary was based on. You can’t predict injuries and their long term effects. Similar stories for the rest and please don’t forget that Djourou was excellent last season before his injury, you judge him now on performances in an unfamiliar role. You really need to think things through before you write stuff like this. Gutter press fodder!

The total wages at Arsenal were highlighted in the AST meeting on Monday night as being around £130m, they must be paying insane wages to very average players. Tottenham are 10 points above Arsenal in the PL and spend around £80m on wages. You can’t seriously blame a salary cap for Arsenal’s woes when the have just released astronomical wage figures!!!

John – your clearly a know it all, djourou was not brilliant, Rosicky has not been playing at his best for over two years now, his wages are a joke, and the title what direction? clearly showing sackin Wenger is not the right direction.

Andy – It’s not the salary to blame for the woes its to blame for Wenger not going out and spending 30m+ on a player because all them players demand over 80k a week.

Actually, this is a very good analysis of why & how the transfer policy could be changed. basically, the board are being penny wise & pound foolish!
