Xavier Hernández Creus, normally known as Xavi,is a Spanish central midfielder born on January 25,1980 in Terrassa in Catalonia.
Xavi has spent all his footballing life at the Camp Nou having joined Barça when he was only 11.He quickly made his way through the youth and reserve teams and was a key member of Jordi Gonzalvo’s FC Barcelona B team that won promotion to the Segunda Division.
Xavi made his official first team debut on August 18,1998 in Super Cup final, when he scored against RCD Mallorca. He quickly went on to become a key member of Louis van Gaal’s title winning team in 1998/1999 season.
Season 1999/2000 was also a good one for Xavi as due to the injury to Guardiola he was the first choice for a large part of the season. After the legendary captain left for Italian football he became the playmaker of the team and has continued to demonstrate the full range of his talents in this position.
He has always been a key member of the team – a fact made clear by the 300 official games he completed whilst still only 25 years old.
Although he is most used as attacking midfielder,he is also capable to cover any position in the center of the team,an ability reflected in the fact that he was the most used player in the League winning 2004/2005 season, playing 36 games in all.
He is contracted to Barça until 2010 with buyout clause of £100 million.
Xavi won his first Spanish cap on November 15,2000 against Holland and has since been a regular fixture in the Spanish squad. His trip to the World Cup was in doubt due to a knee ligament injury, but he recovered in time and was named as part of Luis Aragones’ squad. He was named ‘Man of the Match’ in Spain’s first match against Ukraine and played in all of Spain’s other three matches, before they were knocked out in the second round. He played for national team at 2000 Olympics,2002 World Cup,Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.
