QPR’s Robert Green – Record Breaking Goalkeeper

If you’d of asked me last season how I felt about Robert Green as a goalkeeper I wouldn’t of been too positive about his abilities. With the arrival of Julio Cesar I felt confident that we now had a brilliant goalkeeper, and that Green would play less games for us as Cesar would be number one choice for the rest of the season.

After Mark Hughes was sacked and Harry Redknapp brought in as a replacement, Green played a few more games for us. I felt somewhat nervous, (more so than the average football fan) when an opposing player would race towards the box, I didn’t believe in Green as a goalkeeper and thought of him as more of a calamity, an accident just waiting to happen. Which probably had something to do with that terrible attempt at a save in 2010’s England v USA Euro Qualifier back when Green was England’s number one and Clint Dempsey’s shot rolled past green almost in slow motion after a slight fumble with the ball, this sort of mishap didn’t fill me with confidence. However Cesar started most games of the season, with Green only making a few odd appearances when Cesar was injured and in two FA Cup games.

With QPR then relegated back to the Championship it was a dead cert that Cesar would be snapped up by Arsenal or Napoli and that Green would once again be our number one (With the forgotten man Brian Murphy as a substitute). Cesar however failed to secure a new team and is still currently with the R’s. Green must have either really stepped up his training regime in pre-season or bumped into a genie/eaten some magic beans as so far this season he has beaten Brazil’s number one Cesar to a starting place for the R’s, been nominated for the Skybet Championship Player Of The Month award, won the Air Asia Player Of The Month award and meanwhile on the pitch he has conceded only two league goals in ten games and last but by no means least beaten the QPR record with eight consecutive clean sheets.

My opinion on Robert Green has, as you can imagine, changed quite dramatically. The figures speak for themselves, but you don’t break records by being average. With current England number one Joe Hart having a bit of a nightmare with his performances there has been plenty of talk of Green having another call up to England. Meanwhile Green has spoken out on his career with QPR;

“Despite last season, I really like playing here, I love the club and only live eight miles down the road”

he is currently in the last twelve months of his contract with the R’s and on the subject of a new contract had this to say

“It’s as settled as I’ve been in my career, so if it came about, it’s definitely worth talking about. It’s something I’m happy to discuss.”

QPR are currently sitting second in the Championship with a game in hand – just behind Burnley on goal difference – And Green and the boys seem to be unstoppable in every sense of the word, with Green in goal and a rock solid line of Defenders, a Midfield full of both young and hungry players and the more experienced players all hungry for promotion and Strikers like Andy Johnson (2 goals) and Charlie Austin (5 goals) with top goal scoring ability it’s looking to be a whole new team and more importantly a whole new spirit in the QPR camp.

QPR’s next fixture is Millwall away on Sat 19th October.
