Realistic Targets for Arsenal’s Wenger

With the outstanding (and surprising) signing of Mesut Özil, Arsene Wenger and the board still hesitated in buying a back-four player and a striker. This did bring some worry to the fans although they were full of excitement from the £42.5 million signing.

With a fresh Thomas Vermaelen back from injury it doesn’t seem too worrying. But depth is still needed. RB is the most ideal position that needs reinforcements. Bacary Sagna has proven himself as a very good player and has shown his commitment to Arsenal for 6 years now, but he’s hit 30 years of age. He’s still a good player but he hasn’t got that pace he once had and he isn’t as dangerous whilst on the attack. With Giroud being Arsenal’s only striker, they could be in trouble if he gets injured and his natural replacement is Bendtner. There is Sanogo but he needs a lot more time to get used to the BPL.

Now we know that the funds really are there for Wenger to spend, I’m sure we all hope to see Wenger bless the Premier League with yet another star. Below is a list of players I feel that Wenger should pursue in January or next Summer. I’ve gone for the players I feel can happen, so for that I’ve decided not to inlcude Rooney and Suarez.

The players are in no particular order and I’ve also only done the positions: Right Back and Striker only.

5 – Micah Richards

The English RB (who can also play CB) from Manchester City, when he’s not injured, can be an outstanding player. Yet to make an appearance for City this season and only getting 7 league apps last season, his most outstanding season came in Manchester City’s title winning season. He made 29 league apps and was one of the stand-out players for them with the likes of Silva, Aguero and Yaya Toure. His injury problems have set him back a lot but when fit, he’s a machine running up and down the wings doing his defensive and attacking duties very well. At only 25, he has still got good years to come and could even break back into the England team.

4 – Daniel Carvajal

The Spanish RB who transferred to Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen during the Summer of 2013 has surprised many people. He’s broke into to the 1st team ahead of Alvaro Arbeola and got himself 6 League appearances this season so far. He’s caused havoc among the oppositions defense due to his very high attacking contribution. Most mouths at the moment are comparing him to Dani Alves, I personally think that is quite fair. He has huge potential and he is very similar to Kieran Gibbs and that’s why I feel Wenger would be interested in him.

3- Martin Montoya

The Spanish RB for Barcelona has been at Barcelona since he was 8 years old and has made appearances for mainly the Reserves team but held out until he was asked to play with the first team. Ever since then, he’s impressed pundits and recent Barcelona managers with his blistering pace and huge resemblance to Dani Alves (who isn’t getting any younger). Whilst being very similar to Carvajal, the fight for the future 1st team spot in the Spanish National team will be an exciting battle with both players being dubbed to have successful careers. He’s obviously the long-term replacement for Dani Alves but if Barcelona decide to go and by another RB then it might make Montoya want to force a move away from Camp Nou and towards 1st team football.

2 – Karim Benzema

The French Striker for Real Madrid has shown himself to be a world-class striker in all competitions including the prestigious Champions League. Ever since joining Real Madrid in 2009 from Lyon, he has shown why Madrid paid €35 million on the French striker. His brilliant positioning and his clinical finishing ability helped Madrid to their 32nd La Liga title by scoring an impressive 21 goals in the league and 32 including the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. He is a player that could easily walk into most Premier League sides but could possibly favour Arsenal because of Wenger’s French influence. No matter about that though, he has the capabilities to fire 20+ goals for any team in the league.

1 – Christian Benteke

The Belgian Striker for Aston Villa is one of the most spoke of strikers in the Premier League at the moment. He is a man built for running and to never stop. Just like Lukaku, Christian was built to look like a tank and he has an amazing amount of strength (whilst having a nice amount of pace also) and is merely impossible to barge off the ball. Benteke joined Aston Villa from K.R.C. Genk during the Summer of 2012 and has been the main man for Aston Villa since then. Still at a young age (22), he is playing like a player in his prime and making most things seem rather easy. Benteke’s first league campaign was outstanding. He got 34 league apps and bagged himself 19 goals and to get a record like that in your first season in the BPL at the age of 22 can only mean that he is going to be an outstanding player in the future.
