The revival of Paris Saint Germain

22 February 2011 by

Paris Saint Germain, or normally abbreviated to PSG, were formed in 1970. In their ‘short’ existence, they have achieved a lot. 2 Ligue 1 titles in 1986 & 1994, 8 Coupe de France victories, 3 Coupe de la Ligue wins and a UEFA Cup Winners Cup Win in 1996. The club has also had the likes of Claude Makelele, George Weah, Pauleta, Carlos Bianchi, Safet Susic, Ronaldinho and Nicolas Anelka play for the club. However, over the past decade, the club has struggled, despite its numerous cup victories and being runners up in the 2003-2004 Ligue 1 title race. Since that season, the Parisian club has underachieved massively. Two successive 9th place finishes were followed by two relegation battles. They did finish 6th in the 2008-2009 season, but this wasn’t enough to save Paul Le Guen’s job.

The 2009-2010 season was no success either, but this was expected as a season of transition under new manager Antoine Kombouare. He signed Turkish goal scorer Mevlut Erdinc from Sochaux for 9 million Euros, along with Christophe Jallet from Lorient and Gregory Coupet from Atletico Madrid. He also gave one of the biggest prospects in France, centre back Mamadou Sakho a place in the starting eleven. They finished 13th with 47 points, a massive 31 points behind winners Marseille, but a Coupe de France victory got them Europa League qualification.

This season however has been a completely different story. They signed defensive midfield Mathieu Bodmer from Lyon for 2.5 million Euros, Siaka Tiene for 1 million Euros from Valenciennes and possibly their key man Nene for 5.5 million Euros from Monaco. This season, the squad has gelled together and the team is confident of at least getting a European place in an ever increasingly tough league, in which there is a 15 point difference from 1st to 13th. PSG are currently 5th in the league, but only 4 points off leaders Lille. They are also in the Round of 32 in the Europa League, were they are awaiting the second leg against Belarus side BATE Borisov, grabbing a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Belarus.

The team is now almost complete. The goalkeeping issue has been resolved, the defence is one of the strongest in the league, the midfield is well organised and the strikers have started to score more frequently Here are their 5 best players;

Mamadou Sakho-The 21 year old vice captain has become the best defensive talent to come out of France in ages. He has become an integral part of his hometown club, with his from earning him a first French cap.

Nene-The Brazilian midfielder has probably been the Parisian’s sides key player, with 13 goals and 7 assists in 23 games from attacking midfield. Signed from Monaco in the summer after spells at Espanyol and Alaves.

Guillaume Hoarau-The big striker has regained the form he had in his first season at PSG, with 14 goals and 5 assists from 31 games. He has been likened to Karim Benzema and Peter Crouch.

Ludovic Giuly-The former Lyon, Monaco, Barcelona and Roma player is continuing to show why he is still a key fixture in the PSG side. He has scored 4 and assisted 7 goals in 22 games.

Mathieu Bodmer-The defensive midfield has resurrected his career at Lyon after failing to break through to the former 7 times champions side. He is a key segment in Kombouare’s side as he allows the more attacking players in Ludovic GIuly and Nene to get forward.
