Seagulls fly past Magpies

A heavily weakened Newcastle United side were eliminated from this year’s FA Cup competition by Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls saw off the Premiership threat – who evidently missed latest departee, Demba Ba – with two excellently builty up goals by Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins.

The first-half had a slow tempo and build to the game but still provided us with enough entertainment in the comfort of our sofas (if at home) and padded seats (if at AMEX).

Firstly, David Lopez volleys a power house shot straight to the arms of goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, from the edge of the box.

Then a beautiful cross-field ball by captain Gordon Greer for Wayne Bridge to cross saw the Albion take the lead mid way through the first-half.

The first-time cross was met to the feet of spanish midfielder, Andrea Orlandi, who managed to cheekily flick in his miscontrolled touch into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

You can clearly see how delighted boss, Gus Poyet was with the result with his cool hand waving celebration and smug look on the Uruguayan’s face!

The Albion continued to dominate their Premier League conterparts with 65% possession and created to equal the Toon on attempts at goal.

Newcastle’s miserable day continued with stand-in captain and long-term servant, Shola Ameobi, receiving a red card for a second bookable offence on winger David Lopez.

It looked set to be an Albion win and the 21000 fans will look forward to Sunday’s draw.

But just so all doubt is removed, Will Hoskins beats the offside trap and finishes an emaculate pass from Lopez to seal the deal and send the Seagulls to the 4th round of the FA Cup.

The Seagulls continue their record of being unbeaten at their new home in the prestigious competition and look forward to more Premier League opposition as they are drawn home again against either Swansea or Arsenal.
