Saturday’s clash between Burnley and Middlesbrough promises to be an intriguing affair between two clubs who love to play attractive football. The away side have made an impressive start to the season with four victories out of seven. Former Boro legend Tony Mowbray has turned the club’s fortunes around, as they looked set for a relegation battle under previous …

This is now my fifteenth Npower Championship preview right here on footballblog.co.uk, this time around I will give my thoughts on Middlesbrough. The team from Teesside were the early favourites for the title last season; however as the 10/11 table proves pressure got the best of Middlesbrough as they had a dismal Championship campaign. With Tony Mowbray in charge and a whole season to build a squad capable of promotion, it’s about time Middlesbrough started challenging for a top six finish…

I now move onto another preview of Leicester City’s 2011/2012 opponents, this time around I give my thoughts on Leeds United. The Whites have been on a rollercoaster for many of season’s going through the highs and lows of English football, but at the moment they seem to be on the fringes of the promise land, can they claim promotion back to the Premier League in the 11/12 campaign or will they have to battle it out for another season in his very competitive league…

Burton Albion 2-1 Middlesbrough
Two late Shaun Harrad goals saw Middlesbrough sensationally dumped out of the FA Cup at the hands of League Two strugglers Burton Albion.
A defensive lapse allowed Brewers striker Harrad to fire home the winner deep into stoppage time. A sense of deja vu for Boro fans; this the third time in less than a month that their side have thrown away leads in time added on.
The Championship side dominated with Kris Boyd testing Albion keeper Adam Legzdins before heading narrowly wide. Tony McMahon also threatened, his effort hitting the crossbar.
After a …

Cash-strapped Portsmouth heaped yet more misery on Gordon Strachan’s Middlesbrough side, coming from two goals behind to grab a late draw at The Riverside.
Boro took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break but once again failed to hold on to it courtesy of a David Nugent Header and a controversial late penalty from Liam Lawrence.
Both sides began the afternoon lingering dangerously above the relegation zone and little was to change after the final whistle, with the league’s pre season favourites left 15 points adrift of leaders QPR.
Gordon Strachan made four changes to the Boro …

Kevin Thomson has followed Kris Boyd to the Riverside in a deal worth £2m.

The 25-year-old midfielder made just over 80 appearances for Rangers in his 3 years at Ibrox and became a favourite with the supporters for his battling performances in the heart of the Rangers side. Reports suggest Thomson was forced out from Ibrox and had demanded a pay-out to the leave the club which leaves a sour taste in the mouth after 3 very successful years for the former Hibernian star.
Thomson joined Rangers in 2007 for £2m from …

Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson is the next player to be targeted by Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan after the former Celtic manager brought Kris Boyd from Ibrox earlier in the week. Thomson would be one of a number of former Old Firm stars at the Riverside with Chris Killen, Scott McDonald, Willo Flood, Barry Robson and Kris Boyd plying their trade in the English Championship.

Manager Walter Smith confirmed “There has been an interest from Middlesbrough. So far we haven’t reached any agreement”. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move …

Rangers striker Kris Boyd has signed for Championship side Middlesbrough on a 2-year deal.
The 26-year-old netted an impressive 101 league goals in 143 games for the Gers. Boyd also won 2 league championships in his final 2 years at Ibrox.

In January 2006, Boyd joined Rangers from Kilmarnock for £500,000 and immediately made an impact in Alex McLeish’s failing side with 20 goals in just 17 starts. Under Paul Le Guen, Boyd lead the line in Europe with three European goals in the UEFA Cup campaign. However, the league would be …

Middlesbrough’s nightmare season was summed up in a lifeless 1-1 draw against an average Coventry City side in their final home game of the campaign. A flat atmosphere and weakened sides suggested that this game was to be a dead rubber and the outcome was just that; it seems that the end of the season can’t come quick enough for Boro, as they look to reshuffle the pack for their first full season under Gordon Strachan in an attempt to return to the top flight.
Not even drastic ticket price cuts were enough to draw in the home …

It’s been a rollercoaster ride of a season for Middlesbrough and from a Boro point of view; it’s fair to say that it’s had more downs than ups. With four games to go it seems the players and fans have long accepted that the Riverside Stadium will be hosting Championship football next season.
The season began with high hopes of returning to the top tier of English football at the first attempt. Although many of the clubs’ big stars, including – Downing, Huth, Tuncay and Alves were sold, the squad looked in good shape …
