Burnley 1 – 2 Blades & The Play-Off Shake Up.

Sheffield United failed to make up any ground on the Play-Off positions despite registering their third away victory in four league games at fellow promotion hopefuls Burnley. The victory was achieved thanks to another stunning free-kick from James Beattie and a header from Billy Sharp, with Andy Cole scoring a late consolation goal in the 80th minute.

The victory took United into 11th place in the Championship with 60 points, although The Blades still remain 5 points adrift from 6th-placed Crystal Palace, who recorded a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe – a result which condemned Sharp’s former club to an instant return to League 1. Charlton Athletic are a point ahead of United on 61 after coming from behind to draw at Southampton, and FA Cup finalists Cardiff City beat Blackpool 3-1 to go ahead of United on goal difference (10th).

United now have two home games at Bramall Lane against second-placed Bristol City and Hull City in fourth, but the victory in Lancashire means that The Blades are still on target to achieve Kevin Blackwell’s target of 12 points from their last four games. Their last game of the season is the long trip to Southampton, a match that could also have a bearing on another Sheffield club – The Saints are currently two points and three places above Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy the final relegation place on goal difference, level on points with Leicester City, who could only draw with relegated Colchester United.
