Greece Football Blog

It was the game that every football writer wanted to divert their attention too. The irony of this game with the political backdrop has had hacks falling over themselves to come up with the best headline, the best financial similarity to the game or researched David and Goliath stories.
Once this fixture became a reality, this writer knew that the previous space in the Greece press box would no longer be quite so evident,  add to that the fear that I may also fall for the inevitable  temptation to jump on …

This writer has a confession to make:
For all of you who have read my first three blogs about Greece, you may very well have concluded that I was expecting to write a final piece today, that ended my brief reporting career for Euro12. My introduction indeed sent out that message, as I predicted my new role might last about eight days, eight years after this teams most memorable achievement. The theme of the blogs is about a tragedy, so you would have been forgiven for thinking that this writer had …

For those of you joining us at Act Two in this Greek tragedy that follows the National Football Team through its storyline of Euro 2012, a short plotted history of events so far:
Act One against the joint host nation Poland revealed our hero, the defining role in all tragedies was fulfilled by one Dimitris Salpingidis, introduced for the second half of Act One. Dimitris almost single handily dragged Act One back in favour of the Greeks, securing a point when at half time all seem lost.
Crucial other elements of a …

For all of you who have read my opening blog  “Introduction to a Greek Tragedy”  published before Greece’s first game in this tournament, you will know that we were looking for a number of elements in this opening game against Poland that would make the perfect tragedy.
In true Greek style, my adopted team certainly didn’t let us down, every part of the tragedy was played out with enough drama and suspense to make us all wonder if Act Two & Three against the Czech Republic & Russia respectively, would ever …

Having been selected to write for the Greece National football team during Euro 2012, I have an uneasy feeling about just how long I will be here. Eight years on from what may be Greece’s all time football achievement in lifting the European Championship Trophy in 2004, it could be that just a matter of eight days may see the end of this writer, eight days being the length of time in between Greece’s opening game against hosts Poland and their final group match against Russia on the 16th June.

Argentina are safely through to the last sixteen, after two late goals were enough to overcome a negative but stubborn Greece. The victory ensured  La Albiceleste top group B with maximum points and now face a mouth watering repeat of the 2006 second round clash with fellow Latin Americans Mexico.

Needing only a point to secure top spot in the group, Maradona made seven changes to the side which faced South Korea, resting several key figures. Nicolas Otamendi, Clemente Rodriguez and Nicolas Burdisso were drafted into the defence, Juan Veron and Mario Bolatti entered the …

Argentina will seek to mathematically ensure their passage into the second round, in this final group game with Greece.  With six points to their name already, La Albiceleste are essentially through, unless they suffer a heavy defeat and South Korea beat Nigeria by several clear goals. However, momentum is of great importance at a World Cup and Maradona’ smen will be looking to ensure theirs remains by securing maximum points and sending out a warning to their rivals in the process.

2004 European Champions Greece have revealed their new home shirt that they will wear at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The team scraped through to the tournament in South Africa after a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Ukraine. Dropped points against the likes of Moldova saw Switzerland steal top spot in their group leaving them with the tricky play off encounter. The Greeks have been pitted against Argentina, Nigeria and South Korea in a competitive group. They will hope to show the form that made them European Champions in 2004.

This was a do or die match for both nations after Russia went down to Spain and Greece went down to Sweden. The match was 2004 Champions vs Gus’s Russia. Greece looked very weak in their opening match playing super defensive could Russia get the win that they so badly needed?
Greece dumped the 5 man defence and made nurmerous changes to look for a win they brought in Christos Patsatzoglou, Nikos Liberopoulos, and Yannis Amanatidis at the expense of Giorgios Karagounis, Paraskevas Antzas and Fanis Gekas.
Guus Hiddink changed two players …
