The Netherlands booked their place in their third World Cup final after overcoming a determined Uruguay side 3-2 at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town last night.
The Dutch were strong favourites before kick-off and took an early lead through Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s stunning 40 yard strike. Arguably this world cup’s best goal however was surrendered before half-time when Diego Forlan struck to pull his side level; his long range effort decieving Maarten Stekelenburg, who couldonly flap the ball into the roof of the net.

Holland opened there 2010 World Cup account with a comfortable win over Morten Olsen’s Denmark. The men in Orange stuttered through the first half, but found rhythm in the second, as an own goal from Daniel Agger and a tap in from Dirk Kuyt sealed all three points.
The first half was a bit of a bore, as both sides struggled to find a opening. The first real opportunity fell to the hands of Dirk Kuyt but his shot was hit straight at Sorensen.
Both teams had fairly decent efforts before half-time, …

However only days ago the Bayern Munich winger suffered a hamstring injury, meaning that Robben could well be sidelined for this month’s World Cup.

However for the fans they will be hoping for a repeat of the 1970’s success, in which Holland were able to reach two back to back World Cup finals. From 1958 to 1970 the European Country failed to qualify for every World Cup, but in the year 1974 that all …

With a large hoard of creative players at their disposal, very few would write the Netherlands off from going all the way at South Africa 2010. However, the Dutch have never actually won the biggest tournament in World football despite possessing some of the best players of all time throughout their history. A major reason for this is that the expansive football, that looks so easy on the eye, is often their downfall when they meet the more resolute teams in the latter stages.
