The Italians have produced some of the world cups’ greatest moments; think Baggio’s heroics in `94, the two late goals that saw them knock out the hosts and reach the final in 2006 and not forgetting the semi final of 1970, arguably the greatest world cup game ever. These moments and more have made Italy one of the most dominant and decorated forces in world cup history since its early days in the 1930’s.
Second only to Brazil, Italy have a rich history in the competition, crowned world champions on four occasions; 1934, 1938, 1982 and …

Reigning and defending world champions Italy are preparing for two testing forthcoming friendlies, where they will face Mexico and Switzerland in the space of just two days.
The Azzurri first take on Mexico in Brussels on June 3rd; a tough opposition, who will no doubt give the Italians a feel of the competition on offer at this summers World Cup.
A tight turn around will see them travel straight to Geneva on the 5th to face Switzerland for their second friendly. Seen as a similar type of opposition to those Italy will face in the group stages, the Swiss …

Depending champions Italy have announced their provisional 30 man squad for the world cup finals this summer. Manager Marcello Lippi though has not held back in rejecting big named players for the flight to South Africa including talisman Luca Toni. Only a scattering of players remain in the squad from the glory days of 2006, with the likes of Cannavaro, Grosso, Buffon and Gilardino still in the running to make the cut.  The squad is heavily populated with Italian based players, but for some of them, it will be so near yet …

Current World Cup champions Italy have revealed their new away shirt that they will wear in the defence of their title at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The Italians had a relatively comfortable path to qualifying for South Africa as the Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria were their main opposition. Bulgaria never provided a threat after numerous early draws whilst Ireland were prevented a win over the Azzurri by a last minute goal that sealed Italy’s qualification. The team are the defending World Cup champions after beating France in the …

Defending your title in any sport is never an easy task. However, 2006 World Cup winners Italy could not have asked for a much kinder group to begin the defence of their crown. The Azzurri should have no problems navigating out of a group containing minnows New Zealand and Slovakia. Only Paraguay are likely to provide any real challenge towards Italy’s quest to top the group. Ever since their World Cup triumph, Italy have been criticised for constantly fielding ageing players. The disastrous reign of Roberto Donadoni was …

Following several rumours over the past couple of months, Italy have seemingly revealed their new official shirt that they will wear during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Following a disappointing performance in the 2008 European Championships, Italy would have to ensure that their ageing team did not count against them in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
The current reigning World champions were drawn into a potentially tricky group alongside Bulgaria, Ireland, Montenegro, Cyprus and Georgia. The Irish had previous pedigree of troubling the bigger nations whilst Bulgaria were not to be underestimated with stars such as Dimitar Berbatov and Martin Petrov. The three other teams realistically had no chance of qualification but were all capable of taking …

Alberto Gilardino scored the goal that booked Italy’s seat on the plane to South Africa and condemned Ireland to a play-off place in a dramatic game at Croke Park. Before the game Ireland needed a win to keep alive their hopes of automatic qualification, they had already secured a play-off spot as Bulgaria got thrashed 4-1 in Cyprus earlier that day. Ireland fans were confident they could win the game but Italy weren’t going to go easy on the Irish as they only needed a point to qualify. The Italy team …

The shambolic and catastrophic demise of italy in this years confederations cup is confirmation of many things. They are relying on older players, they are scared of youth and they cannot play the same defensive way as they have.
Italy has a great footballing history, they are giants of the game, and along with Brazil are arguably the most successful national team in the world. So where has it all gone wrong. Well, lets not forget that they are the current world champions, however they won that tournament with a nucleus …

The mood in the famous town of Pisa, western Italy, has been grim for the last week, its citizens in a state of despair after their football team, Pisa Calcio, was relegated to play regional football next season in Italy’s Serie C1, after losing their final home game of the season to Brescia last Saturday. The fiery Italian fans, who sung out in protest at the handling of their club throughout the match, were given something to lift their spirits last night though, as the Italian national side came to town, and …
