Full-backs
Honourable mentions:

Fabio Coentrao – A frustrating year for the 26 year old former Benfica man, playing second fiddle to Marcelo for club and having a disappointing World Cup for country. However, he is still an intelligent player, who is technically skilful and tactically versatile. Young enough to still …

Confidence and keeping their nerve was the essential aspect of the game to secure a plane to Brazil and that is exactly what occurred early on between England and Poland, despite the hostile atmosphere inside Wembley. The away fans boomed out the national anthem, as well as booing the home anthem. It was as of the game was held in Warsaw not London.
Anyhow, there were glimpses of both teams with, as expected, Robert Lewandowksi shone by tormenting the centre back pairing of Jagielka and Cahill who looked unwilling, maybe nervous …

It’s amazing how in the course of a 90 minute game, a faint hope, a lingering dream can be either realised or crushed. The Russian national football team walked into their match with Greece favourites to progress from Group A. 2 hours later, they left Warsaw defeated, and more importantly, eliminated from Euro 2012 purely due to the fact that Greece won. A lack of discipline ultimately proved to be the decisive factor, and a solitary goal against the run of play was enough to seal the Russians fate.
The first …

It’s safe to say that when I was allocated Russia to write about, I had no idea what it was I was getting myself into. Providing the more entertaining game of the first night of action with a doninant 4-1 win over the Czech, then their fans making themselves well and truly known for the wrong reasons outside the stadiums, the Russians have provided football fans with plenty to read about, and me plenty to write about. This appears to have reached a peak last night, with fireworks erupting both …

For all of you who have read my opening blog  “Introduction to a Greek Tragedy”  published before Greece’s first game in this tournament, you will know that we were looking for a number of elements in this opening game against Poland that would make the perfect tragedy.
In true Greek style, my adopted team certainly didn’t let us down, every part of the tragedy was played out with enough drama and suspense to make us all wonder if Act Two & Three against the Czech Republic & Russia respectively, would ever …

The chance to compete at the European Championships, in front of your own fans, doesn’t come around too often.
In fact for Poland, this is an exclusive occasion. Twenty-six Poles have been battling it out for a place in Franciszek Smuda’s final squad, but on Tuesday three were told they had missed the final cut.
And Smuda classed the decision to exclude Tomasz Jodlowiec, Kamil Glik and Michal Kucharczyk as ‘the worst moment for a manager’ in an interview with yahoo.co.uk

Franciszek Smuda is aiming for national glory
“The decision was incredibly hard for the …

As Ian Holloway would say, it’s ‘squeaky bum time.’ A Northern Ireland win, and they are in pole position, whilst if Poland win, the race for qualification is wide open once more. Gone are the days where Northern Ireland’s last few games are treated as meaningless, as after an abysmal start, Nigel Worthington’s troops have swung the momentum full tilt in their favour.
But Poland will be no easy task. Whilst Windsor Park is made into a fortress for home matches, the Silesian Stadium will prove to be a living hell-hole …

Poland sat on top of their group after the first two game of the campaign but never looked convincing against Slovenia and San Marino but managed to still sneak points the key in World Cup Qualifiers.
The real test was to come in the next two games with Poland facing group favorites the Czech Republic and a strong Slovakia outfit.
Poland vs Czech Republic
Poland hosted group favorites the Czech Republic in a game which would define the direction of their campaign over the next year lose at home and they face tough …

Poland opened their campaign with a match against Slovenia and San Marino both games bring some success to the Poles.
Poland vs Slovenia
The first game began with the stronger nation Poland attacking early but Slovenia hitting the back of the net in the 17th minute after a penalty was awarded. Michal Zewlakow was the Slovenian that put the ball in the back of the net. The Poles were determined to win this one and equalised in the 35th minute when Zlatko Dedic put in a cross from Milivoje Novakovic about 10 …

UEFA checked this week to what extend is prepared Poland and Ukraine to Euro 2012. The officials from the European federation are convinced that Ukrainians will not be ready with new roads, hotels and airports. According to the Polish newspaper UEFA wants to move the final match or even the whole tournamnet to Poland.
UEFA is also considering playing both semi-finals in Poland and moving all matches of one group to Poland which were supposed to be played in Ukraine.
The head of UEFA Michael Platini is full of worries. “The situation …
