Preston Draw Effectively Ends Play-Off Hopes

Nicky Maynard

Bristol City’s chances of making the Coca Cola Championship Play-Offs for the second year in succession now seem very slim, as the Robins drew 1-1 at home to Preston in front of the Sky cameras this past Saturday.

Although the away side seemed to have the better chances, it was the home side which struck first, after half time.

Upon 59 minutes, Dele Adebola excellently turned his marker, providing enough space to cross for top scorer Nicky Maynard to head home his eleventh of the season.

However, ten minutes later City fans’ chanting was silenced when Youl Mawene equalised for North End, capitalising on poor near post marking from a corner. The corner itself was seemingly unnecessary itself, right back Bradley Orr taking the blame for needlessly knocking the ball out.

Both sides had chances to win it, but it remained 1-1.

City manager Gary Johnson admitted that the odds of getting into the top 6 were growing longer.

He told BBC Sport: “We were a goal away from a good performance but a couple of mistakes cost us dear and now our play-off chances look slim.”

“While it’s still mathematically possible for us to finish in the top six we will be giving it all we’ve got. But we can’t afford any more basic errors.”

Bristol City lie in ninth place in the league, with 59 points. Preston remain in seventh, with 62. The elusive sixth spot is currently occupied by Cardiff City, with 64 points, although with their games in hand, Burnley appear the more likely target to try and catch, with a 66 point haul so far.
