Having fielded a second-best team against Romania, resting players for the quarter-finals after being certain of qualification, Marco van Basten has masterminded another victory for the Dutch team. This makes it the third consecutive win, all of them by more than one goal, and having registered two clean sheets: one by van der Sar and one by Stekelenburg. The only goal to be conceded came from Thierry Henry in Holland’s 4-1 thumping of France.

Everyone was nearly looking at the shocking possibility of the World Cup finalists being eliminated by Romania’s two draws against them but mighty Holland kept them at bay. Second half goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Robin Van Persie put the result beyond doubt and there was no hope left for Romania to qualify with Italy winning 2-0 against France. Romania’s adventure ended yesterday in the Euros finishing third in Group C ahead of France with 2 points.

A determined Romania side battled hard to push the Italians nearly to an early elimination from the European Champions. Incredible drama in Zurich with Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon saving the world champions from being dumped out on Euro 2008 by Romania. Christian Panucci pulled down Daniel Niculae in the box and Adrian Mutu who had already scored for his team had his penalty saved, as Buffon went the right way and manages to get a hand and leg to the poweful shot.

As Italy get underway for tomorrow’s match against Romania, Ciprian Marica will not be with Romania against Italy. Vitor Piturca, Romania national coach confirmed this in a press conference, saying They are all well except Marica.

It was the first game of Round 1 of matches in Group C, watched by over 30000 supporters at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich. The match was followed by another Group C encounter between Italy and the Netherlands, which ended in a 3-0 thrashing of the World Champions by Holland.

Romania made a promising start to Euro 2008, with a 0-0 draw with France in Group C. The game itself was most likely the worst of the tournament so far, with a cagey opening from both teams, the game failed to burst into life and Romania restricted France to half chances, the best of which fell to Nicolas Anelka, who headed over Franck Riberys cross in the first half.
