A perfect ending for the Chipolopolo which couldn’t of happened in a more poignant atmosphere. With the 1993 air crash in which Zambia players died, it was very much a motivation to drive Zambia to victory. It took a lot of hard work and occasional bits of luck to get them to Libreville. Let’s take a look at their journey in this year’s competition.
It all began against a Senegal side which looked, on paper, like a force to be reckoned with. Demba Ba couldn’t have entered the tournament in better …

A game which had everything, the tears, the drama and the passion.  Either side could have won the match in normal time but it was penalties that saw Zambia lift the trophy in Libreville.
Zambia started brighter and created an early chance for Sinkala after a well worked corner fell to him just inside the area but his shot was well saved.  Ivory Coast struggled to get a firm grip on the game and it became a midfield battle. Neither side wanted to give too much away and it was a …

A semi-final which could have gone either way but it was Zambia who took their chance and will now play the favourites Cote D’Ivoire in the final.
Ghana dominated the match and earned themselves a penalty in the first half after a cross was intercepted by Gyan who was felled by a Zambian defender. Up stepped Gyan to take the penalty and a poor penalty at that, saved by the keeper and Zambia survived. Zambia needed to up their game as the Black Stars were dominating them and looked the more …

The first quarter final of this year’s competition and both sides had a reason to feel optimistic about the game. With Zambia topping group A they were the more confident of reaching the semi-finals and their attacking line-up reiterated this.
The game started with both sides getting a sense of possession without either side really threatening each other’s goals. Zambia looked a lot more positive going forward and took the lead in the 14th minute through Stoppila Sunzu. A whipped in free kick was nodded home easily by Sunzu who gave …

A bizarre incident involving a Zambian midfielder has seen him sent packing by the team after breaching discipline in their eyes.
Zambian midfielder Clifford Mulenga broke team curfew by partying late into the night with three of his teammates.  The other players involved apologised for their behaviour but it has been rumoured that Mulenga showed no remorse to head coach Herve Renard.
I can’t say he will be sorely missed by the squad as he has only briefly appeared for Zambia at this year’s tournament. He came on as a late substitute …

Udinese striker Alexis Sanchez came off the bench to score twice for Chile as the South Americans swept past Zambia in Santiago.
Chile began slowly against their robust opponents and struggled to break down a side who reached the quarter finals at the African Cup of Nations in January. At half time coach Marcelo Bielsa made four changes including the introduction of Sanchez which took just seven minutes to pay off.
The outstanding Jorge Valdivia fed the ball through to Carlos Carmona out wide who crossed for Sanchez to tap in from close …

Zambia suffered heartbreak as they were defeated by Nigeria in a penalty shootout. Herve Renard’s men were by far the best side throughout the game with plenty of possession and a host of chances, but failed to convert any with the heartbreak of spot-kicks eventually deciding their fate – Thomas Nyrienda missing the one penalty that made all the difference.
It was Zambia who created the first real scare when a Felix Katongo corner caused some discomfort for goalkeeper Enyeama who charged off his line and flapped at thin air.

At the …

Gabon have been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Zambia.

Goals from Rainford Kalaba and James Chamanga ensured victory for the Copper bullets with a late strike from Gabon’s Marcolino providing a tense finish, however in the end Zambia were worthy of their win.
It was the worst possible result for Gabon as they were eliminated on goal difference and leap-frogged by Zambia who qualify in first place and Cameroon in second, who were held by Tunisia. All 3 clubs finished level …

Zambia face Nigeria on Monday as they fight it out for a coveted place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 16 years.
Zambia were bottom of the standings in Group D going into their final match, but Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Gabon lifted them on to four points with Cameroon and the Azingo but they stole top spot in Group D show having scored more goals.
“Against Nigeria, our target is to reach the semi-final,” said Zambia coach Herve Renard, who grabbed Football Association …

Zambia coach Herve Renard is confident of a victory over Gabon that would put his side into the African Nations Cup quarter-finals.
The two sides meet in Benguela with plenty still to play for heading into the final matches of Group D, which is currently led by the Panthers on four points from two games.
The Zambians are bottom of the table with a single point, but the rules of the competition – head-to-head is preferred over goal difference – means that a win will see them advance at the expense of …
