Argentina

Too strong for Argentina.

Sports News - February 12, 2009Argentina national football team hold training session in Moscow

When you play your rivals, you always want to win, so when Brazil had a chance to put more doom and gloom in Argentina’s world cup qualifiying campaign they took it.

Some people were surprised by Brazil’s 3-1 win, some were not, but at the end of the day someone had to win.

Argentina looked lively from the start but it was Brazil who opened the scoring when a Kaka free-kick was headed home by luisao. Just after the half hour mark Kaka was involved again as his cross was blasted at goal by Maicon but Andujar saved and the rebound fell to Luis Fabiano who made it 2-0. After alot of Argentina pressure they finally reduced the deficit when Datolo scored with a curling shot from outside the penalty area. Sevilla striker Fabiano quickly restored Brazil’s lead by finishing off a superb counter attack.

The game was not over though and Argentina pressed and pressed but couldn’t find a breakthrough. First Inter Milan’s Diego Milito shot well but Julio Cesar saved magnificently. Then after that Carlos Tevez tried a to score a belter from long range but shot just over the bar. When the final whistle sounded all you could hear were boo’s as Argentina had just gifted their bitter rivals a place in the world cup. For the one’s who wern’t booing, it must of been shock and disbelief as the Argentinians firmly believed they would win this game. They needed to win but sadly for Argentina Dunga’s boys were in town to ruin the day.

After the game Brazil manager Dunga said “I am proud of the players, today’s performance was magic and i hope we use this as a platform in the 2010 world cup”

Diego Maradona had a totally different view “We should’ve won and we know it, if we had of won would of improved our chances of qualifiying”

That win in Rosario booked the Brazilian’s flight to South Africa as they have now qualified for World Cup 2010. Coach Dunga has done a magnificent job and can now relax and enjoy the rest of the qualifiers. But for Diego Maradona it is going to be a month or two of media pressure in Argentina as this result was not meant to be. It’s Paraguay’s turn to try and stop Argentina on Wednesday while Brazil face Chile in Rio De Janiero. I think Argentina will either really struggle against Paraguay or really dominate as its Maradona’s words after this result that will effect that result. Brazil will win Chile as they will not stop trying just because there through, they will attempt to win the South America qualifiying group, but one team they don’t want joining them in South Africa next June is obviously the Argentinian’s, and they’ve but a big bullet-hole in the chances of Argentina getting to the world cup although i still think they will qualifiy.
