Tottenham Finalise Vertonghen Move

13 July 2012 by

Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen, after the two clubs agreed terms yesterday.

Vertonghen, who signed for an undisclosed fee, becomes Andre Villas-Boas’s second signing in a week, after the club have already welcomed Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 25 year old Belgium International made 220 appearances for Ajax and had one year left on his contract. The Dutch player of the year in 2011-12 scored 10 times in 37 games for Ajax last season. Vertonghen captained Ajax to their second successive Eredivisie championship last season, receiving Ajax’s player of the year in the process.

The move, thought to be in the region of £10m, was said to be Vertonghen’s ‘Dream’ move. The 6ft 2 defender stated ‘It feels good to be a Tottenham player and be here at the club’.

He went on to say ‘My mind was made up by the feeling Daniel Levy gave me’.

‘He told me he really wanted to have me at the club and that gives a player an amazing feeling. It is important that a club wants you. Now im here, I really love the white shirt. It is a dream come true.’

Andre Villas-Boas is now spoilt for choice when picking centre backs ahead of the new Premier League season with Vertonghen looking likely to partner Younes Kaboul. Michael Dawson, Steven Caulker, Ledley King and William Gallas are all viable options too.

Of course it will be disappointing to lose Luka, but if we must, I see no reason why Spurs should go lower than £60M. A GK is a must. And a striker in addition to Adebayor. However, 3 or 4 of the younger players can be given more 1st team action.

I also believe that AVB will let Modric go for a sum between 30-40 million. Sigurdsson and Vertonghen are both good standard signings and i believe that this extra money will help buy a good keeper (lloris) and a proven goalscorer, in the realms of Huntelaar and Llorente.
