Villa closing in on Sidwell

Aston Villa are thought to be close to completing their first signing of the summer. Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell is said to be prepared to take a 50% wage reduction to move to the Midlands.

Sidwell only joined the Blues last summer from Reading, but has struggled to command a starting place in an already star packed Chelsea midfield.

A fee of around £4.5 should net the former Reading star which would still give Chelsea profit on last summer’s Bosman signing.

Further evidence of the transfer escalated tonight as Sidwell was left out of the Chelsea 18 for the Champions League final in Moscow.

Any close season is fun for wild speculation and there is no reason why Villa fans should not be part of the merry go around.
    Or is there?
Martin O’Neill is not one of soccer’s most talkative men when it comes to transfer activity. From past experience at all of his clubs, he’s been very, very, circumvent when it comes to who his transfer targets are. In fact he’s rumoured to have posted warnings around the club against any club member causing speculation, and why not.
He’s also supposedly very, very indecisive when it comes to buying players if comments made by past club owners are true and its likely, he’s not the most dynamic of transfer managers usually leaving everything until the last minute, as any Villa fan will know.
This summer it could be different with the need to get players high, the squad not being the biggest of course.
I’d guess as last summer, he’ll get his priority signing(s)early then its wait and see and with an early kick off in July to hand its could be a fun time for fans
