As the fans leave the Fitness First stadium, there is still an echo of the faithful singing “we are staying up, say we are staying up”.
We fans have only one man to thank and that is the AFC Bournemouth manager. Eddie Howe has worked miracles at the club after it looked doomed at the start of the year.
Bringing Steve Fletcher, Liam Feeney, Anton Robinson and Mark Moesley has given the team an all-rounded balance which has helped the team take home the three points. Grimsby travelled to the south coast also looking set to secure league safety.
With Grimsby going into the half time with a 1-0 lead and 10 men for the mariners, things looked set not to be going their way but there was a promise for the team. Bournemouth came out in the second half and pegged Grimsby back with a Liam Feeney strike, after Danny Hollands shot cannoned off the bar.
Big Steve Fletcher, the hero of the south, then popped with a cracking little shot that found the back of the net. That the shot popped up with his 100th goal for the club, which the man himself can only celebrate in his own way.
That goal certainly saved us from the brink of extinction and the Cherries will certainly be looking for the form which ended the season, come August to bounce back into League 1.
But one thing is for certain, one man has certainly saved the red and blacks season by uniting the team and giving them the confidence the team truly needed.
In my view, Bournemouth escaping relegation, has proved to be one of the most brilliant managerial appointments in current time. Many would argue that he has already done more than a lot of people might have expected and in view of the argument that there is a lack of young British managerial talent in our game, I do feel that the promise he has shown deserves to be highlighted in the media and wider football world.
A true legend Bournemouth legend now and definitely set for greater things.
No disrespect but I’m glad to know I will be travelling to Bradford, Port vale and Darlington rather than Wrexham, Salisbury or Oxford United.
One thing is for certain and that is that the fans will be singing into the night, “We are staying up say we are STAYING UP”.
