2023 EFL Cup QuarterFinals Preview

This season’s EFL Cup has presented plenty of surprises. The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are already out of the competition. Manchester City and Manchester United are now among the favourites to lift the silverware – the latter are aiming to end a six-year trophy drought.

The quarter-final ties consist of seven Premier League teams and League One side Charlton Athletic. The Addicks have been the surprise packages this season but face a tall order to reach the semi-final stage after being drawn against high-flying Manchester United away from home. The EFL Cup quarter-finals will be played on January 10 and January 11 and here are our predictions.

Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic – January 10

United are scheduled to face Charton for the first time since 2007 when the latter were a Premier League club. They have had an exceptional record over the years against them and have won the previous 10 meetings. It should be another straightforward game. There will be plenty of goals for United against a club languishing 17th in League One on the back of seven winless games.

Prediction: Manchester United 5-0 Chartlon Athletic
Newcastle United vs Leicester City – January 10

Newcastle outclassed Leicester in the Boxing Day Premier League meeting at the King Power Stadium. They raced to a 3-0 lead after just 32 minutes on the clock and managed to comfortably see out the remainder of the contest. With home advantage in Newcastle’s favour for the quarter-final, we could see another repeat of the same performance against a Foxes side that looked all over the place defensively in the recent outing in the Midlands.

Prediction: Newcastle United 3-0 Leicester City

Nottingham Forest vs Wolverhampton Wanderers – January 11

Forest and Wolves have been two of the Premier League’s most inconsistent teams. The duo are 19th and 18th in the standings respectively with just three wins apiece. Goalscoring has been a concern for both. Hence, it could be a tightly-fought contest. Forest may have the edge over Wolves with the tie being at home where they have won all of their league games this season.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Southampton vs Manchester City – January 11

Southampton have picked up a couple of draws and a win against City over the past two years. However, we don’t see them surprising the Cityzens this time around. The Saints have conceded 10 goals in the last three league outings alone and are unlikely to keep the Cityzens quiet. Pep Guardiola’s side have scored four goals in the last two meetings against the Saints and it could be more of the same.

Prediction: Southampton 0-4 Manchester City
