A-League Squad for Socceroos Asian Cup Qualifier

Australian coach Pim Verbeek has named his squad for the up and coming Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia.

The 21 man squad all currently playing in the A-League was a surprising choice as most of the players have yet to gain a cap for the national side or show any signs of being able to play together as a unit.

The squad has 6 Melbourne Victory players which should form a base for team unity and fluency with Goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos, Strike Pair Archie Thompson – Danny Allsopp, Star Defender Roddy Vargas and Midfield Duo Tommy Pondeljak – Billy Celeski.

Verbeek is likely to go with combinations that have worked in the A-League instead of mix and matching players from different clubs so a strike pair of Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp is as likely as the Central Coast pair of Dylan Macallister and Matt Simon who have also been called up for the match.

The top 4 A-league teams make up 17 of the 21 man squad with surprise inclucions from Celler Dwellers Newcaste United Utility Matt Thompson and Winger Tarek Elrich and experience from Perth’s Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Sydney’s Shannon Cole.

Adelaide’s Star Captain Travis Dodd and Newcastle’s Marquee Player Joel Griffiths were the surprising faces not in the squad both with plenty of talent but amazingly not in Pim’s plans at the moment.
