Is Barcelona’s Lionel Messi Overrated?

So with a blood and guts performance, Chelsea overcame the odds and hold a slight advantage going into the 2nd leg of the semi final. But why did this happen?? Barcelona have the best player in the world but could still not break down what is the Premier League’s sixth best team (currently).

This is why the pint sized maestro Messi would not be as successful in the English Premier League.

Chelsea obviously went into the game with a certain game plan which showed with the possession stats and shots at goal but did they have a plan to stop Messi? With so many other world class players within the Barcelona team can a side go out to stop an individual when the collective will just as easily run riot.

With John Terry and Gary Cahill having exceptional games and putting in some superb blocks, the whole of the Chelsea team were organised and efficient, which showed that with a more physical game plan and organisation Barcelona can be stopped and so can Messi.

If Messi were ever to come and play in the English premier league there is no doubt he would be a great assest but would he deliver like he does in La Liga and would he be playing 50+ games a season with the premierships brutal and long fixture list.

His current statistics are played 53 games, scored 63 goals with 25 assists.

My argument is that with players like Ryan Shawcross, Vincent Kompany etc taking chunks out of him every week if not twice a week he would not be able to last the whole season therefore making his chances of having a successful season like this one very difficult.

Is it too easy in La Liga? Cristiano Ronaldo proved himself in the Premiership and is now keeping up with Messi’s great season in La Liga, does this mean that Ronaldo is more of a complete player because he has proved his ability in two different styles of football, for me it does.

What is your view? Could Lionel Messi work his magic in the English Premier League?

So what you are suggesting is that players would just boot Messi around and referee’s would permit this? He is so good, tey would resort to illegal means to prevent him being successful?

Examine all of the chances which Barcelona created last night and then see how many Messi was involved in.

Only the Sanchez shot off the bar did not have any involvement from Messi.

This whole “Could Messi play in the Premiership” debate is farcical.

This whole argument is stupid. Barca were a crossbar away, a mis-hit away and a few other goal scoring chances away from this article being titled “barca are amazing etc etc” and no one focusing on Messi’s performance. If any of those chances had fallen to Messi, he would have at least scored one of them. Chelsea gave no barca players any space whatsoever outside the box and did a very good job of it.

Player of Messi’s quality would perform anywhere. I don’t know why everybody keeps thinking that premiership is the best league in the world. This year there are 2 spanish teams in she CL semi and 3 spanish teams in Europa League semi!!!

Another one of those stupid english articles written before their team is knocked off! Same old foolishness since 1966. How can a sane person judge Messi on a single match which chelsea needed more luck than tenacity to win. If ronaldo could get 42, why wouldnt Messi? He doesnt score in every game in laliga, but you dont get such brainless articles being published in spain. He has scored 8 goals in 6 matches agains man u and arsenal you stupid idiot. By the way, those two teams are miles ahead of Chelsea. Osasuna, getafe and chelsea have one thing in common: all got lucky against Barca, happens only once in a long time so forget about tuesday, chelsea will be ripped ti little shreds, all in the first half!!!

The soone English idiots like you realise that EPL is a lesser league, the less of this brainless drivel we will get. To think you are probably paid to write this rubbish. What a waste of space.

so many experts have realized that if the ball isnt played around messi you wont get to see the best come out from him..thats how it is with anyplayer..give them the ball more often and they will christiano ronaldo and fernando torres when he was playing for liverpool

messi lacks speed..he is very quick and skillful but lack speed thats why pele rated neymar much better than messi..becoz his skilful and has great speed..he creates and scores.

close down the space on messi..then he wont score..thats how english teams play..tough play..messi cant handle tough play..he would never survive in the english league..there is to much runing and tight marking..CHELSEA WILL FINNISH BARCA ONCE AND FOR ALL..ITS ALL IN A MATTER OF TIME…CHELSEA CHELSEA!!!!!

@Anonymous, you talk a lot of nonsense, just look at Aguero, Silva, Mata, and Torres, all played in Spain and all are thriving(Maybe not Torres since his injury) in the EPL. Messi would score just as many goals, or probably more, being that the EPL lacks technic and skills. He would terrorise every club in the EPL, and just like he gets a kicking in La Liga, but still continual to be the phenomenon he is, same will applied in the EPL. Used your head, You don’t become Ballon d’Or 3 times on the trot if you’re overrated. Overrated applied to the Rooney’s and Beckham of this world, not to Messi.

With the retarded defenders and ridiculously bad goalkeepers, Messi would even do better in England than in Spain. Ask Silva, Aguero, Mata or Torres. They also couldn’t do it in England, right?

For those saying if we didn’t have Messi on our team, we would have bought other players to score goals and we would have been almost as good.

This is such a ignorant point to make. This would have been true if Messi was there just to score goals for us, but he isn’t. If Messi was not around, we would not only need to replace him with another great striker, but we would need to change the way we play. Who can say our possesion football would have been as good without Messi? We play possesion football, even our 10 years old team plays exact same way, even Arsenal in some sense play in similar way. But what makes Barcelona so much better than anyone? Because we have Messi. How many times have you seen us struggle to score even though we have 70% possesion or more? This is exactly the point some people seems to be missing. Messi just don’t score goals in Barca, he makes our possesion football effective. We could buy another top quality striker in Messi’s absence but team bunkering against us will have a lot more easier task to deal with us. Hell, even if we swap Ronaldo( supposed 2nd best player in the world for many) for Messi, we would struggle to win as many games. Messi don’t only scores but his dribbling abilities and his passing makes it possible for us to unsettle opposition and it makes us easier to break these teams down. Without Messi, the team needs to play different game than we do today and this will ask for different players in midfield, attack and defence. Which could result in several of our best players being ineffective in their new role.

    2) For people who say ” But Spain win the World cup and Euro without Messi”

Well, yes they did. But do you guys seriously think that the countries play as good football as club sides? How many countries are there who can beat Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Valencia, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Manchester city, Chelsea…….. even Levante or Espanyol? CLub teams play more as a team and are better overall and thus hard to beat than National teams. Therefore, you can’t say a team winning the World cup or Euros will win the league or CL.

Other thing is that, Spain in World cup showed just how important Messi is to Barca. Sure they won World cup, but they were never as dominating as Barca. They were very close to loose to Chile, lost to Switzerland and won the Netherlands on extra time. That’s 3 of the 7 games where Spain were troubled a lot. People who says Barca players won the Euro should however consider looking at the line up of that Spain team as there were not many Barca startes on that team.

if messi played with real madrid he would score more than 70 goals

    ronaldo is overrated & selfish

btw, messi won WC U20 in 2005 & golden medal in 2008 with argentina

fake ronaldo with portugal ??? zeroooooo

messi would rape every english team if he went to england easily

Why are you crucifying the writer of the article.Anytime an article doesn’t toe some people’s line they attack the writer. People in this category need to learn to be tolerant and imbibe the spirit of sportmanship. The question is simple, can he survive in a physically demanding league like premiership? I doubt if he can.Can Messi even perform without xavi and iniesta? Players are used to running in England and that’s one of the areas of strenght of messi. He ‘s played 3 games against chelsea without a single goal.Messi is good no doubt about that but can’t imagine a footballer of the year without a single goal in a world cup? Do you remember Maradona, Pele, zidan,Kaka,Ronaldo, figo’s performances for both clubs and countries? As for me,Ronaldo is better than Messi anytime anyday.Messi has fifa to thank for many favour shown to him on many ocassion.

its funny realy when some1 so stupid to judge messi because he never score against chelsea LOL

and its funny when some1 so stupid too to mention ( kaka, zidane , ronaldo & figo ) in a way to say they plaed beeter for countrey & club

messi first of all better than all of them & for the record zidane played for the best french team ever & ronaldo played for the big 4 ( barca, real ,milan & inter ) and he won the league only 1 time !!!!! & never reach the CL final ever

WC is overrated & thats why we saw a player like klose got 13 goals overall

. Paolo Maldini – “In my opinion, Messi should win the Golden Ball each year. He’s an unbelievable player.”

BTW, did fake ronaldo score a super hatrick against arsenal ??^_^

Rem’ber dat cr7 had a dream to play in madrid dats y he left n moreover madrid is a bigger club than united, tell me which epl team is bigger than Barca? I just appreciate ronaldo’s game type and efforts when playing.

Yet more deluded English superiority from a deluded English supremacist. Messi cant play in English that’s why year on year he CRUSHES Man Utd, Arsenal.

EPL is better than La liga, that’s why 5 of the 8 teams in the semis of the Euro competitions are Spanish and only one English team( a COWARDLY Chelsea team that has to wear a nappy in order to cross their half way line ). Can we also mention mid table Bilbao CRUSHING table topping Man Utd with ease home and away.

The writer of this piece almost inevitably was saying 2 years ago that Rooney( quite possibly the most overrated player in world football, since David Beckham) was better than Messi and Rio Ferdinand is the best defender in the world and Wilshere (who?) is better than Xavi and all that NONSENSE.

The fact that Chelsea had to time waste constantly, play with 10 defenders and dive and stay on the ground at every opportunity will be seen as ‘clever tactics’ by the English media. Yet the hypocrites call overseas teams ‘cheating foreigners’ when they use it against their English teams. Bring on the Euros for England to embarrass themselves once again and we can keep idiots like this from writing this crap.

‘Clever tactics’ to The dumb Englishman = 10 men behind the ball. Football is becoming a disgusting game Ecuador of teams like Chelsea and Inter. Idiots In the press calling Di Matteo a mastermind when all he did was tell 10 players to park the bus inside their own 18 yard box. Hardly Guardiola or Mourinho is he?
