As Hazard was passed that ball up in the 69’ minute at White Hart Lane on Saturday around the 40 yard out mark, most people probably thought the same as I did, ‘Who is this guy going to pass to’. However the Belgian magician managed to produce one of the finest first time through balls of all time for another one of Chelsea’s magical midfield to slot home past the goal keeping legend of Brad Friedel. It was quite simply a brilliant goal.
Chelsea proved this week that they are serious title contenders this year and Di Matteo has proved that he was not just very lucky last season but that he is a very strong manager who seems to be making Chelsea tick again. What has been so pleasing to see from a Chelsea fans point of view is a new style of football that has been very quickly ingrown into the club. An attacking style of football that seems to suite everyone in that squad and at the moment you would have to say there are no weak links in it.
However three players have stood out time and time again and these of course are Mata, Hazard and Oscar who with an average age of just 23 could potentially be one of the greatest attacking midfield of all time. They have all shown a goal scoring threat that is very important when you are going to be replacing players like Frank Lampard that you would not bet against scoring week in week out. And even after only 4 months together have shown sensational link up play that can match any. Hazard’s goal against Norwich with a Mata assist was almost an identical replica of Mata’s second against Spurs with the assist coming from Hazard.
Stats also back up how good these players have been – Hazard has provided more assists for goals (21) in the big five European leagues since August 2011, this includes 5 in 8 premier league games for Chelsea. Mata who has also 6 goals and 7 assists in 13 games this season so far and 23 in 53 in his Chelsea career. Oscar scored 2 on his debut including one of the greatest Champions League goals of all time and 3 assist in just 4 games.
All three have looked so impressive this season and next Sunday against Manchester United I fully expect them to get goals against a very poor United defence, their worst for many years. Their pace and passing ability should tear Jonny Evans and a very lacklustre Rio Ferdinand apart just like Gareth Bale did by himself at Old Trafford.
These three are really special players, they have brought a new dimension to the European Champions and they have proved in big games this season that they can produce the good. If Chelsea keep these players fit for the whole season then how you can write Chelsea out of the title race is a mystery. The problem for Chelsea will be if they do get injured because in my view I don’t think Frank Lampard will keep scoring goals and the only other person who could fit in that position is Sturridge and he is not good enough to take on the giants of Europe.
