Why do fans hate Manchester United’s Gary Neville?

Gary Neville is the most capped right back for England, he has won 19 honours with Manchester United and has been with the club all of his footballing career, which shows loyalty and passion for the club.

So why does every football fan, other than Manchester United fans, hate him so much?

His loyalty towards Manchester United should surely be admired as well as his number of appearances for United and England. 85 caps for England and 602 for Man Utd is a feat that very few can compete with.

In a week were Man Utd fans have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for the Champions League final at Wembley and the celebration at Old Trafford against Blackpool 40,000 still managed to find the time and cash to attend Nevilles testimonial in the middle of those two games. For Juventus to bring a side over, it shows the respect Neville has in the world of football and with the players who turned out to give him the best send off possible also shows what the players think of him. Even David Beckham pulled on the reds number seven shirt again for his best mate whilst LA Galaxy played a game with out their star man.

Throughout Neville’s career at Man Utd the home support have loved his 100% attitude to support the Man Utd cause but nearly every opposition fan have hated the way he plays the game and the way he kiss the United badge, this has been demonstrated with songs about him and general abuse he has had to deal with at different grounds around the country. But why? If all these fans had a player at their club who had made over 600 appearances for their club and played for England as well as showing his passion for their club by giving 100% and kissing their badge, the player would be adored in the terraces and go down in the clubs history as a legend.

Are the fans who boo him and sing abusive songs at him just jealous of the kind of player they can only dream of having in their side?

Whatever the reason is Gary Neville has been an asset to club and country over a glorious career that has him decorated in every medal the club game has to offer and for that I hope my club can find a player just like him.
