Just as Birmingham City had picked up a great deal of momentum in their chase for promotion, the Blues look set to lose some of this impetus. Much to the disgrace of many Blues fans, the Chinese-led board appear to have accepted an “undisclosed” fee from Wigan Athletic for winger Jean Beausejour; a player who has played a significant role in Birmingham’s Championship campaign so far.
After breaking into the play-off positions for the first time this season, with a game in hand, and on a good run of form, news of this departure will come as an untimely blow. The Chilean international, 27, has already made 29 appearances during Birmingham’s marathon campaign this season. A creative player who adds a new dimension to Blues’ midfield, his departure will be a loss, that is for sure. Birmingham’s squad is already threadbare, what with all of the financial constraints, and this will only add to the fatigue that squad is surely suffering from. The fee that Wigan are reported to be paying for the winger is “undisclosed,” which many fans have interpreted as meaning something along the lines of “very little.” This in turn has disgruntled Blues fans, who have expressed their anger on a number of forums.
A regular fixture at St. Andrews, it is questionable why Beausejour would want to leave an ever improving Birmingham for a team that is almost certainly to be relegated at the end of the season. Either way, Chris Hughton has yet another issue on his hand, as to who to play on the wing. Can Wade Elliot play on successfully on the wing? Or is Nathan Redmond too young to fill this role permanently?
Birmingham face Leeds tomorrow at Elland Road, a game set to be very tense.
