Man Utd and Barcelona are the two super-powers to be linked with Bayern Munich full-back Philipp Lahm. Lahm is currently 24 years old and at the very best of his football career. The right-back/left-back has been at Bayern since 2001. However, it seems that he has grown tired of the lack of major silverware at the German club. On the 22nd April, Bayern had to withdraw their offer of a new contract and Lahm stated very clearly that he wants a move away from the club.
With Manchester United in pursuit of a Gary Neville long-term replacement, and the club already having done business with Bayern before (to acquire Hargreaves) it seems that they lead the race for his signature. Lahm would be just the player Man Utd need to strengthen their defensive department, which, although has conceded just 22 goals in 37 league games, still needs new blood. Winning the Champions League would provide both the funds, and the attraction for Philipp Lahm to choose to become a Red Devil.
