Manchester United vs West Brom: Pre-Match

The game between Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion is played on Saturday 16th October at 3pm BST. It is played at Man Utd’s home stadium and will be controlled by referee Mike Jones. Manchester United are coming from 3 wins and 2 draws in the last five matches, with the last match played being the 0-0 draw against Sunderland. The last time West Brom were in the Premier League, Manchester United thrashed them 4-0 at home and 5-0 away. Whether the same will happen this season remains to be seen as the Baggies sit in the sixth place with 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in the first 7 matches. In the table, they are just one point behind United’s 13 points, but with a negative goal difference (-3). When West Brom have played away this season, they have scored just 3 goals and conceded 9, showing a poor away form for the club, which will certainly not be helped by the level of Red Devils fan noise at Old Trafford.

One key thing to note is the probable return of Wayne Rooney to the starting line-up. Fans are still waiting to see the best of the young Englishman this season, after the issue with his wife Coleen and the reported recent bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson. United have won all three matches played at home this season, and this record is expected to be extended. This is not saying that West Brom will give them an easy ride, as they are boosted by their sixth place standing after being promoted to this season’s Premier League. Alongside Blackpool, the two promoted teams have surprised everyone this season.

Giggs and Scholes should be able to make it into the first team squad on Saturday after they returned from injuries. But there is no place for Owen Hargreaves to make his comeback from his long-term injury that has ruined a good part of his Man Utd career. United are expected to start with Van der Sar, Rafael da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Scholes, Anderon, Giggs, Berbatov and Rooney, although this line-up is not confirmed officially. Notwithstanding a possibly difficult match, we expect Manchester United to put more than three goals past West Brom goalkeeper Scott Carson, with Wayne Rooney having the opportunity to bring back his goalscoring form.

UPDATE: Rooney and Scholes start on the bench. Hernandez and Carrick take their place in the starting line-up, as above.
