With the January transfer window in full swing and clubs in the Premier League already spending over thirty million pounds, a few clubs in the lower leagues may venture into the Blue Square Premier to pick up a cheeky bargain, here are my top three choices:
Arron O’Connor – Currently joint top-scorer in the Blue Square Premier with 15 goals, Newport’s number 7 joined in July 2012, Newport have enjoyed high levels of success with his goals this season, which surely hasn’t gone unnoticed by the teams in higher leagues.
The other joint top scorer in the Blue Square Premier is Matthew Barnes-Homer, the 26 year old Macclesfield striker rose his own stock with his two goals against Cardiff in the FA Cup, helping Macclesfield reach the fourth round for the first time in their history. Those 2 goals, his 15 in the league and the fact that he is quite a journeyman in the world of Football has probably attracted many scouts to the stands at Moss Rose.
Grimsby Keeper James McKeown is the third and final choice, at just 23 years old, he’s only conceded 19 goals all together in the league (that’s less than any team in League 2) and had 11 clean sheets so far. If promotion is in Grimsby’s future this season, there will be a lot of thanks to McKeown’s safe hands.
With teams always looking for that one bargain to kick start their season, the Blue Square Premier may be the place and January may be the window of opportunity.
