Rasmus Hojlund’s Man Utd Exit Explained As Napoli Striker Prepares For Man City Clash

Rasmus Hojlund during his time at Manchester United

Why and how Rasmus Hojlund left Manchester United, as he prepares to face Manchester City in Napoli colours.

Just three weeks ago, Rasmus Hojlund was still a Manchester United player. Now, he’s returning to Manchester wearing Napoli blue, as they prepare to face City in the Champions League on Thursday night.

Leaving United was not part of the 22-year-old’s plan. A boyhood United fan, he wanted to stay and fight for his place. But after a brutal meeting in the wake of United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, he was told his future lay elsewhere.

Why Rasmus Hojlund Left Man Utd

Hojlund had insisted throughout pre-season that he would remain at Old Trafford “whatever happens.” He even settled into a new home in Altrincham, expecting to play his third campaign in red.

But the arrival of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig pushed him down the pecking order. Left out of three consecutive squads, and with United’s Carabao Cup exit wiping out six potential fixtures, his game time looked non-existent.

Then came the final blow. After the Grimsby defeat, Hojlund sat down with senior figures at United and was told directly: he had no future at the club. The message left no doubt — it was time to move on.

Napoli swooped in seeking a replacement for Victor Osimhen. Antonio Conte convinced Hojlund to join on loan, with the deal including a €44 million obligation to buy if Napoli qualify for next season’s Champions League — a near certainty.

Hojlund didn’t take long to settle. On his debut, he scored just 14 minutes after coming on against Fiorentina.

Hojlund United Record

Hojlund was popular in the dressing room at Old Trafford and is admired for his work ethic.

But his record — 26 goals in 95 appearances — wasn’t enough to justify the €85m fee United had paid to Atalanta in 2023. His goals often came in bursts, and a 21-game barren spell last season exposed his struggles with confidence and consistency.

Still, he was United’s top scorer in Europe during his debut season, netting five times in six Champions League matches — including away to Bayern Munich. For a young striker without penalty duties, it was a respectable return.

Hojlund’s story is another reminder of how young players are handled at Old Trafford. Raphael Varane once remarked that Real Madrid allow youngsters to develop in the shadows, while United throw them straight into the spotlight.

The weight of being a €75m+ striker at the age of 20 was too much for Hojlund and perhaps came too soon.

Hojlund Injury Record

Fitness issues didn’t help his cause. A back injury delayed his debut in 2023, and a hamstring setback the following summer ruled him out of another opening run of fixtures.

By the time he found rhythm, he was playing through a painful foot problem.

United’s lack of striking options forced him to play through injuries, but it came at the cost of sharpness and confidence. In the end, those struggles only strengthened the argument for Sesko to be given the role Hojlund had once held.

On Thursday night, Hojlund has a chance to remind England of the talent United once saw in him.

Conte has already made him central to Napoli’s attack, and a goal at the Etihad would be a sweet way of proving his United doubters wrong.

Man City vs Napoli kicks off at 8pm at the Etihad Stadium.
