What does William Saliba’s new Arsenal contract mean for the club?

News that William Saliba has agreed a new five-year contract with Arsenal will be greeted with universal relief in the red half of north London.

The 24-year-old France international has become a cornerstone of the club’s renaissance under Mikel Arteta, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most dominant centre-halves in the three years since he made his club debut at Crystal Palace.

With Saliba virtually ever-present, Arsenal have compiled the best defensive record in the division over the past two seasons.

He played every minute of the 2023-24 league campaign – a record unmatched by any other outfield Arsenal player in the Premier League era – while the club failed to win or keep a clean sheet in any of the three league games he missed last term.

In short, Saliba has become indispensable to his club – and, inevitably, attracted covetous glances from rival clubs.

Which other clubs wanted to sign Wiliam Saliba?

Chief among those has been Real Madrid.

Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba are widely expected to leave the Bernabéu when their respective contracts expire next summer, by which time Saliba would have had only a year left on his previous contract.

It was in that knowledge that Madrid dispatched representatives to watch Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Given the club’s customary preference for signing players who are out of contract, their interest in Saliba spoke volumes.

Several high-profile defenders are in the final year of their existing deals including Ibrahima Konaté of Liverpool, Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano and the Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi. All will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, and all have been linked with a move to the Spanish capital.

With less costly options available, it speaks to Saliba’s quality that he remained Madrid’s primary target even though he would have commanded a significant fee.

What has William Saliba said about signing a new Arsenal contract?

Arsenal have yet to make a public announcement about Saliba’s new deal, with the formalities expected to be completed in the coming days.

However, the agreement marks the culmination of months of negotiations, and the Frenchman hinted at a positive outcome when asked about the subject this summer.

“Yes, hopefully,” Saliba said when asked if a new deal was on the cards. “There is nothing now, but there is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.”

How old will William Saliba be when his new Arsenal contract expires?

The successful conclusion of those conversations promises to keep Saliba at Arsenal throughout his peak years.

He will be 29 by the time his latest deal expires, and with his central defensive partner Gabriel Magalhães committed to the club until 2029 after signing a contract extension this summer, the club looks set to retain a strong defensive spine for the foreseeable future.
