Vitor Pereira was sacked by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, less than 24 hours after their eighth defeat in 10 Premier League games this season.

Wolves, who were thrashed 3-0 at Fulham after playing for more than half of the match with 10 men following a red card for Ammanuel Agbadou, have taken just two points from their opening 10 league fixtures.

Sunday’s sacking came less than two months after Pereira had signed a new contract with Wolves.

Has a team ever started a Premier League season worse than Wolves?

In 33 previous Premier League seasons, only three times has a team had a worse record after 10 matches than Wolves have right now.

The record for the worst start to a Premier League season belongs to Sheffield United, who took just one point from their first 10 games of the 2023/24 campaign and had a goal difference of minus-22.

Sheffield United also took just one point from their first 10 fixtures in 2020/21. Their goal difference after that dismal start was minus-12.

No other team has been left with just a solitary point at this stage of a season, but Norwich City (2021/22), Sunderland (2016/17) and Manchester City (1995/96) all reached the ten-game mark with only two points. Wolves also started last season by taking just two points from the first available 30.

How many teams have failed to win any of their first 10 Premier League games of a season?

Wolves’ class of 2025/26 are the 21st Premier League team to fail to win any of their opening 10 fixtures in any season.

The 20th was also Wolves, in 2024/25, while Sheffield United (2020/21 and 2023/24), Norwich (2004/05 and 2021/22), Sunderland (2016/17), Manchester City (1995/96), Swindon (1993/94), Huddersfield (2018/19), Everton (1994/95), Newcastle (2018/19 and 2021/22), Burnley (2014/15), QPR (2012/13), Blackburn (1996/97), Watford (2006/07 and 2019/20), Ipswich (2024/25), Derby (2000/01) and Reading (2012/13) have also kicked off a Premier League campaign with a 10-game winless streak.

What is the probability of Wolves being relegated after their awful start?

Many bookmakers currently make Wolves 1/5 favourites for relegation from the Premier League following their terrible run of results. Those odds give an implied probability of 80.00% that Wolves will finish the season in the bottom three.

But history suggests the likelihood of Wolves going down could be even higher than that.

Wolves performed a modern-day miracle by staying up last season after taking just three points from their opening 10 games.

However, 100% of the five previous teams that took fewer than three points from the first available 30 ended up getting relegated, with four of those five finishing bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, of the first 20 Premier League teams that failed to win any of their first 10 matches in a season, 15 of them went down. That statistic points to an 80% probability of Wolves being demoted to the Championship — which is consistent with what bookmakers seem to believe.

The only five teams that stayed up after winning none of their first 10 games were Everton (1994/95), Blackburn (1996/97), Wolves (2024/25), and Newcastle twice (2018/19 and 2021/22).

Where might Wolves pick up their first win?

Wolves — who placed seventh earlier this season when we ranked all 20 Premier League clubs oldest to youngest based on the average age of their starting XIs — will be hoping that a new-manager bounce can work its magic away at Chelsea next Saturday.

But if that fails to deliver, then Wolves have three of their next four games at home, with Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United all visiting Molineux in the coming weeks.

There has not been much evidence of home advantage for Wolves recently, though. Since the start of the 2024/25 season, Wolves have taken precisely half of their 44 points at home and the other half on the road.
