Xabi Alonso’s Uncertain Real Madrid Future Sparks Premier League Talk

Real Madrid Manager Xabi Alonso Gets Injury Boost

Xabi Alonso’s future at Real Madrid appears increasingly uncertain, with reports suggesting that the Spaniard has been handed an ultimatum.

The uncertainty surrounding his future has sparked speculation about a potential move to Premier League holders Liverpool.

Alonso Could Be One Game Away From Real Madrid Sack

There was a lot of optimism when Xabi Alonso succeeded Carlo Ancelotti as the new Real Madrid manager.

Alonso guided Real Madrid to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they fell to a 4-0 defeat against European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Since he did not get enough time with the team before the tournament, the heavy defeat did not hurt his credentials.

Alonso then oversaw a bright start to the 2025/26 campaign, taking Real Madrid to 13 wins in their first 14 games in all competitions.

However, the good feeling went for a toss at the start of November, as Madrid hit a rough patch.

Since November 4, Real Madrid have only won two of their seven games in all competitions (D 3, L 2), losing ground in LaLiga and the Champions League.

In their previous outing, Real Madrid lost 2-0 against Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. They were down to nine men, as Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras were sent off in the second half.

After the game, Madrid’s higher-ups reportedly held an emergency meeting to discuss Alonso’s future. Alonso has been given just one game to spark a turnaround, with Wednesday’s clash against Manchester City set to be decisive.

Injury Crisis and Dressing Room Division Behind Alonso’s Fate

Real Madrid have lost several players to injuries this season, with their defence suffering the most.

In the game against Celta, first-choice centre-back Eder Militao limped off the field with a suspected muscular injury.

Following a thorough evaluation on Monday, Madrid confirmed that Militao had “a rupture of the biceps femoris tendon in the left leg”, which rules him out for around four months.

He joins Dean Huijsen, Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy, and Trent Alexander-Arnold on Madrid’s lengthy injury list.

With Militao injured and Garcia and Carreras suspended, Real Madrid have two defenders available for this weekend’s clash with Deportivo Alaves.

According to reports, Alonso has also been struggling to maintain dressing room harmony. In Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in October’s El Clasico, Vinicius Junior reacted strongly after his coach subbed him out.

Since the altercation, there have been rumours about intra-squad turmoil, with leading Spanish outlets claiming that the dressing room had split.

Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, Federico Valverde, and Endrick reportedly want Alonso out, while Kylian Mbappe, Arda Guler, and Thibaut Courtois are backing the manager.

Ahead of Wednesday’s potentially decisive Champions League clash with Man City, Alonso has insisted Real Madrid are united.

He assured that the team were fully focused on beating the Cityzens and bouncing back from Sunday’s defeat to Celta.

However, if the former Liverpool midfielder cannot lead the All-Whites to a win, a stint in the Premier League could be on the cards.

Why Alonso Could Join Premier League Holder Liverpool

Coming to Xabi Alonso’s options in the Premier League, there is none better than Liverpool.

The Reds have also endured an unflattering run of results under their manager, Arne Slot. The reigning English champions are 10th in the Premier League table, having won just one of their last five matches (D 2, L 2).

They are also in 13th place in the Champions League league table, well outside of the top eight automatic qualification spots.

Club legend Mohamed Salah recently suggested Slot did not want him at the club after the Egyptian was benched for the third consecutive match in the league.

The dressing room unrest would not do the Reds any favours heading into the fixture-packed festive period.

Between Liverpool’s results and Salah’s explosive remarks, Slot finds himself in an incredibly difficult spot. According to English media, the Merseysiders could appoint a new manager if the Dutchman fails to turn things around.

If Slot is sacked, Alonso could emerge as an attractive option for Liverpool. The former Spanish midfielder, who was one of the heroes of Liverpool’s miraculous Champions League final comeback in 2005, would also welcome the move.

Top Three Reasons Why the Liverpool Job Would Be Perfect for Alonso

Bond with the Club

In Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the match against Manchester City, Xabi Alonso admitted he had a special bond with his former club. The Spaniard also did not rule out a future move.

“For sure, there is this bond with the English clubs, for sure with my former club,” said Alonso.

But at the moment this is my place, this is where I want to be, and [in] the future you never know what could happen.”

He knows the city, he is adored by the Kop, and he plays a brand of football that fans would get behind. If he has to part ways with Real Madrid, Liverpool are the perfect club to go to.

Tactical Familiarity

Xabi Alonso loves for his teams to press high and hard. He has had a difficult time implementing it at Real Madrid, but Liverpool players would be right at home.

Thanks to Jurgen Klopp, pressing has become an integral part of their DNA. It helped them hit the ground running under Arne Slot last season, and Alonso would also reap the rewards.

Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong

Xabi Alonso took Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong playing pivotal parts.

Neither Wirtz nor Frimpong have managed to live up to expectations at Liverpool. After getting the best out of them at Leverkusen, Alonso would fancy having the same impact at Anfield.

Additionally, Alonso’s arrival would solve the Mohamed Salah issue, as the Egyptian would get a fresh opportunity to secure his place in the team.
