Frankfurt Transfer Talk: Three signings Dino Toppmoller could target in January

Flares Went Off During Frankfurt Barcelona

With the January transfer window now open, we take a look at three potential targets that Frankfurt could make.

Frankfurt: Three January Transfer Targets

Sergi Altimira

The 24-year-old Spanish central-midfielder is currently contracted to Spanish side Real Betis until June 2029. An ever-present in Los Verdiblancos’ 2025/26 Europa League phase matches, the man marshalling the midfield engine room at the Estadio Benito Villamarín has only made 11 appearances in LaLiga.

Across the club’s previous 13 league encounters, the Spaniard has only played 146 minutes, the equivalent of just a mere one and a half matches of football.

This translates into only one starting berth in manager Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI. Having spent the last two-and-a-half years at the club since joining from fellow LaLiga outfit Getafe, the 53 appearances across all competitions make a move away for Altimira seemingly look unlikely.

However, as everyone knows, money makes people talk in football, especially when it comes to transfers. So, if Frankfurt decide to open up the cheque book to the value of just under £17.5million, Altimira could be on his way to Germany.

William Osula

Previously linked with a move to the Bundesliga after reportedly catching Stuttgart’s attention in November, Newcastle United striker Osula could be off to the top-flight of German football in January this time around.

The 22-year-old Denmark Under 21s international, who has eight goals in 15 appearances, is currently playing second fiddle to fellow strikers Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is currently inundated when it comes to his options in the forward department. Osula has made 10 appearances across the 2025/26 Premier League season, but has only been on Howe’s starting team sheet once.

With an ankle injury ruling the former Burnley man out for the previous 10 matches, only time will tell if Frankfurt want to risk even a potential short-term loan deal until the end of the season.

Arnaud Kalimuendo

Despite only signing on the dotted line at Nottingham Forest in August, Kalimuendo looks set for a January transfer window move to Frankfurt.

Frankfurt, who have been keeping tabs on two starlets this window, appear to see January as the best time to reinforce their forward options with new additions as they seek Hugo Ekitike and Omar Marmoush’s long-term replacements.

According to several reports leaving Germany across the last 48 hours, both clubs have come to an agreement, and Kalimuendo’s medical could be completed as early as Tuesday.

That potentially means he could become the Bundesliga’s second signing in January, after Younes Ebnoutalib arrived from SV Elversberg on the opening day of this month’s window.

Frankfurt are firmly in the search for 2026/27 Champions League qualification and still stand a slim chance of progressing to the knockout stages of this season’s competition.

More than likely, via the playoff round, with two matches remaining in this season’s league phase campaign. Further forward reinforcements in front of the goal, with new signing Ebnoutalib and potentially Kalimuendo, will be welcomed by everyone associated with the club.
