Why Mo Salah Will NOT Feature in Liverpool vs Burnley – Despite Egypt’s AFCON Defeat

Mo Salah Is Currently on AFCON Duty

Mohamed Salah will take no part in the upcoming Premier League clash between Liverpool and Burnley, despite Egypt’s defeat by Senegal in the Africa Cup Of Nations semi-final.

The Liverpool superstar has already missed five Premier League matches since mid-December.

Why Mo Salah Will Not Feature in Liverpool vs Burnley

Liverpool have been without their talisman, Mohamed Salah, since December 20.

In his absence, the Reds have dropped points in three of their five Premier League matches, drawing with Leeds United, Fulham, and Arsenal. Liverpool’s 600-game Premier League streak ended in the goalless stalemate with the Gunners.

Burnley, who are in 19th place in the league table, are up next for Liverpool. And Salah will once again be unavailable for selection.

Egypt lost 1-0 to Senegal in the AFCON semi-final on Wednesday night, further boosting Sadio Mane’s head-to-head record with Salah. However, Egypt still have one more match remaining in the competition – the third-place decider against Nigeria on Saturday.

The game will kick off an hour after Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Burnley. Salah is expected to play the full 90 to help Egypt secure a third-place finish.

When Will Salah Play Again for Liverpool?

Salah, 33, will return to Liverpool after the third-place AFCON match, possibly on Sunday, and join training on Monday.

If deemed fit, Salah could make Arne Slot’s starting XI for the UEFA Champions League meeting with Marseille on Wednesday night.

Salah has played 20 games for Liverpool in the 2025/26 season, scoring five goals and providing four assists.

Mo Salah Could Finish as AFCON Top Scorer

Mo Salah drew criticism for his performances in the first half of the season. The former Roma forward, who finished as the top scorer and assist provider in the Premier League last season, only recorded four goals and three assists in 14 league matches before leaving for international duty.

At the AFCON, Salah has looked at his best. Before drawing a blank in the semi-final against Senegal, he had scored in each game he had featured in.

In the group stage, he scored in the 2-1 win over Zimbabwe and netted the winner in the 1-0 victory over South Africa. In the Round of 16, he scored one goal as Egypt beat Benin 3-1 in extra time. Then, in the quarter-finals, Salah scored and provided an assist in the narrow 3-2 win over the Ivory Coast.

Salah is currently the second-highest scorer at AFCON with four goals, with Morocco’s Brahim Diaz leading the race with five. Morocco will face Senegal in the cup decider, and it is likely to be a tense affair, with only a handful of goalscoring opportunities.

Salah’s Egypt are more likely to have an easier time against Nigeria in the third-place decider.

They have a stronger squad, featuring players who are better at creating chances. Considering the form that Salah’s been in lately, we would not bet against scoring and pulling ahead of Diaz in his final outing.
