Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s Potential Girona Debut Date Revealed

Ter Stegen Potential Girona Debut Date

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen could reportedly join LaLiga side Girona by the end of this week.

Ter Stegen has been in the Catalonian capital since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014. His contract with the Blaugrana runs until June 2028.

When Will Marc-Andre ter Stegen Make Girona Debut?

According to Spanish outlet Diario SPORT, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is inching ever-closer to a move away from Barcelona.

Hansi Flick has given the No. 1 position to Joan Garcia, starting him in every important game across LaLiga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espana, and the Champions League this season.

With opportunities few and far between, Ter Stegen may have to leave Barcelona to play in the World Cup.

Until last week, Girona were reportedly the only team to register an interest in the German goalkeeper. And Barcelona are prepared to facilitate a departure in the January transfer window.

Ter Stegen and Girona have been in advanced talks over a loan move, and now an agreement seems imminent. All parties are in complete agreement, and everything points to it being finalised this week.

Girona have already invited Ter Stegen’s entourage to be present next Monday, 26th January, at Montilivi for the LaLiga clash against Getafe.

Although it would be his first week with Girona, the coaching staff feel he is ready to start from day one. Girona want the German to make his club debut in front of Girona supporters.

Why Girona Are Signing Ter Stegen?

Although he has not played a single minute of LaLiga football this season, Ter Stegen is seen as an upgrade over the current goalkeeper options at Girona.

Girona’s first-choice keeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, has not met expectations this season, despite recording decent numbers. He has conceded 28 LaLiga goals, facing 89 shots on target. His 73% saving rate puts him in the 67th percentile. But Michel is not happy with his footwork.

Gazzaniga’s understudy, Dominik Livakovic, meanwhile, has a strained relationship with the coach. He is likely to leave after Ter Stegen joins.

Michel greatly admires Ter Stegen and has spoken to the goalkeeper on several occasions to discuss the sporting project at Girona. The 33-year-old has received assurances that he will be a central figure at the club.

The deal also benefits Barcelona. As part of the loan deal, they will save a portion of Ter Stegen’s salary. Additionally, if the loan move works out, a permanent transfer, worth a handsome fee, could materialise in the summer.
