Arsenal have signed Illan Meslier on a free transfer, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal is done – medical completed in London on Tuesday, contract signed, and the former Leeds United goalkeeper committed to the Arsenal project.

The Gunners identified Meslier, 26, as their leading option to fill the back-up goalkeeper role as they prepare for life without Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has asked to leave in order to reclaim a regular starting berth elsewhere.

Romano Drops the Confirmation

Romano posted on X: “Illan Meslier to Arsenal, here we go! Medical already done and deal sealed with former Leeds United goalkeeper. Contract also signed after medical done in London on Tuesday. Meslier said yes to #AFC project.”

That is not vague transfer noise. Romano’s ‘here we go’ tag carries a specific standard, and the detail – medical location, day confirmed, contract signed – leaves nothing conditional about this one. Arsenal get a free agent goalkeeper with Premier League experience without spending a penny in transfer fees.

Arsenal had shortlisted Meslier alongside Yan Sommer, Matthew Ryan, and Stefan Ortega as options to replace Kepa. Meslier has now emerged as the chosen solution, and the speed of the medical and contract suggests talks had been progressing quietly for some time.

The Leeds Context – Why This Arrival Is a Surprise

Describing Meslier’s arrival at Arsenal as a surprise is not unfair. His tenure at Elland Road ended in considerably worse shape than it began, and the circumstances of his exit speak plainly to where his stock currently sits.

Meslier conceded more goals than any other Premier League goalkeeper in both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons – the latter being the campaign that ended with Leeds’ relegation. The late-season arrival of Sam Allardyce saw Meslier dropped in favour of Joel Robles.

He was “steady” during the Championship stint that followed, though an infamous moment in which he allowed a ball to bounce past him in the closing stages against Sunderland became emblematic of his inconsistency.

Daniel Farke eventually dropped him again in the latter stages of Leeds’ promotion push, with Meslier’s only two competitive appearances coming in Premier League 2 football – where he conceded six goals across 180 minutes. Leeds had no intention of offering a new contract.

The Arsenal Rationale

Set against that backdrop, the logic of the signing is straightforward even if the optics are mixed. Meslier costs nothing in fees.

He is 26 and was, not so long ago, regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Europe. Kepa was given Carabao Cup and FA Cup opportunities by Mikel Arteta in recent seasons, and Meslier will be working from the same template – a capable deputy with aspirations of eventually forcing his way into contention.

Arsenal’s summer activity has been broad and purposeful. The club have also been active on contract extensions across the squad, and personal terms on further signings are reportedly progressing, suggesting this is a window with genuine ambition behind it rather than piecemeal additions.

The Verdict

The deal is done. There is no fee, there is a known medical limitation on the downside risk, and Arsenal are getting a goalkeeper whose early-career ceiling was high enough that a reset at a Champions League club is not implausible.

Whether Meslier can rebuild at the Emirates is a genuine question – but Romano has confirmed the move, the contract is signed, and the announcement is imminent.
