Nottingham Forest Tipped to Sack Ange Postecoglou Before Man United Axe Ruben Amorim

Ange Postecoglou of Nottingham Forest

Ange Postecoglou has been the manager of Nottingham Forest for less than a month but he is already the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his position.

Since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground on September 9, Postecoglou — who remains unwilling to deviate away from pure “Ange Ball” — has taken charge of six Forest matches and has yet to win one.

Fans were generally accepting of the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, which came just four days after he arrived, but the 3-2 Carabao Cup loss to Swansea City stung.

That was followed by away draws against Burnley and Real Betis and then a 1-0 defeat by Sunderland in Postecoglou’s first home fixture.

Ange Postecoglou targeted with “sacked in the morning” chants from Nottingham Forest fans

On Thursday night, Forest lost 3-2 at the City Ground to Danish side Midtjylland in the Europa League, during which many fans turned on Postecoglou, chanting: “You’re getting sacked in the morning!”

It might not happen that soon, but Postecoglou is indeed now the outright favourite to be the next manager to move on.

Postecoglou can be backed at evens to be the next Premier League boss to depart, while Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is second in the betting at 6/4.

How the odds changed on Ange Postecoglou in the sack race

Postecoglou was a 16/1 shot to be the next manager sacked after his first defeat as Forest boss. Those odds later drifted to 33/1.

But when the market reset following Graham Potter’s dismissal at West Ham on September 27, Postecoglou’s odds were cut to just 6/1, before back-to-back home defeats saw him become the even-money favourite.

Could Ange Postecoglou really be sacked before Ruben Amorim?

It seemed highly unlikely when Postecoglou was hired. While many doubted Postecoglou was going to survive for the long haul — with many fans and pundits even tipping Forest for relegation last month — he was widely expected to outlast Amorim.

Of course, he still might. If Man United lose at home to Sunderland on Saturday, Amorim could well be a goner.

But if Amorim survives that test then Postecoglou will remain the sack-race favourite going into the international break, with no guarantee of still having a job at the end of it.

What did Ange Postecoglou say in response to “sacked in the morning” chants?

After the final whistle against Midtjylland, Postecoglou was asked directly about the chants that rang around the City Ground.

“I heard it,” he admitted in his post-match interview with TNT Sports. “They’re fans, they want to see their team win and they’re entitled to their opinion. Nothing surprises me in football any more.”

The Australian accepted that Forest’s defending had been costly again, adding: “Really, really poor goals we conceded in the first half that again allowed the opposition to get comfortable in the game and it’s been the story of our last few games. Key moments, let ourselves down.

“We knew the threat they provided, it wasn’t anything organisationally, it’s just in those moments we haven’t shown the same desire and determination as the opposition.”

How much would sacking Ange Postecoglou cost Nottingham Forest?

Postecoglou only signed his Forest contract on September 9, a two-year deal running until the summer of 2027. His salary is reported to be around £3 million per year, with a further £1 million available in bonuses.

If Forest were to terminate his deal now, they would likely be liable for the remainder of his fixed salary — more than £5 million.
