Newcastle United have dismissed reports linking Sandro Tonali with a deadline day move to Arsenal, insisting no contact has been made by the north London club.
Claims of Arsenal pushing for a late deal emerged earlier on deadline day, but Newcastle sources are adamant that no approach has been received.
The club were said to be surprised by the reports and remain relaxed about Tonali’s future.
Newcastle deny Arsenal interest in Sandro Tonali
According to the Chronicle, Newcastle were baffled by a report from Florian Plettenberg suggesting Arsenal were attempting to sign Tonali in the final hours of the window.
The Magpies insist there have been no direct talks, formal enquiries or informal discussions with Arsenal regarding the midfielder.
Tonali remains a key part of Eddie Howe’s side and has featured in every Premier League game this season.
Newcastle see no reason to consider selling such an important player, particularly without time to line up a replacement.
Arsenal exploring market for Mikel Merino replacement
Reports linking Arsenal with Tonali were sparked after confirmation that Mikel Merino will miss an extended period with a foot injury.
The midfielder is set to undergo surgery after suffering a bone injury against Manchester United, leaving Mikel Arteta short of options in central midfield.
With Arsenal tipped to win the title by a record margin, that setback may prompt the club to explore the market late in the window, with Tonali emerging in reports as a potential target.
Newcastle, however, insist those reports are wide of the mark and maintain that no approach has been made.
Tonali transfer rumours
Aside from Arsenal, Tonali has been regularly linked with a return to Italy, with Juventus and AC Milan often named as potential destinations by Italian journalists.
However, Newcastle believe that no Serie A club could realistically meet their valuation of the 25-year-old.
The midfielder is under contract at St James’ Park until the summer of 2029, with the option of an additional year, putting Newcastle in a strong negotiating position should any club come forward.
Would Newcastle sell Tonali?
While Newcastle deny any Arsenal contact, they are aware that interest from a Premier League rival would place them in a commanding position.
Any deal would likely require a significant fee, particularly to another Premier League club, especially given Tonali’s importance and long-term contract.
For now, Newcastle’s focus remains on the pitch, with no indication they are willing to entertain late-window disruption.
What Sandro Tonali has said about his future
Tonali himself has previously played down long-term guarantees about his future. Speaking towards the end of last year, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football.
“This is a tough question because, you know, in football you need to think year for year,” Tonali said. “I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years or five years I will go.”
Despite the speculation, Newcastle remain confident Tonali is settled and committed, and they insist the midfielder is not the subject of any deadline day approach from Arsenal.
