Arsenal vs Olympiakos Head to Head: Greek Side Boast Remarkable Recent Record at Emirates Stadium

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta fitness update

Arsenal and Olympiakos will meet for the 13th time this week after being drawn together in the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.

The game is at the Emirates Stadium and, on paper, Premier League title contenders Arsenal are strong favourites, partly due to home advantage.

But recent history says being at home might not be advantageous in this fixture. Each of the last six meetings between these clubs has been won by the away side – a run that includes three straight Olympiakos victories in north London.

Olympiakos’ winning streak away at Arsenal

Three trips, three wins. Olympiakos had never enjoyed north London like this until a remarkable run across six seasons turned the Emirates into fertile ground.

The sequence began in 2015 with a chaotic group-stage shock, continued with a last-gasp Europa League knockout blow in 2020, and was capped by a disciplined single-goal success in 2021.

Ruthlessness at key moments was the common thread. Whether punishing set-piece lapses, striking seconds after Arsenal equalisers or managing pressure late on, the Greek giants repeatedly found ways to make the home crowd – and the home players – feel uneasy. For Arsenal, the streak became a nagging storyline; for Olympiakos, it grew into a belief that the Emirates could be conquered again and again.

September 2015: Arsenal 2-3 Olympiakos

Context: Matchday 2 of the Champions League group stage. Arsenal were under pressure after losing to Dinamo Zagreb, with Bayern Munich to come in back-to-back fixtures.

Key moments: Felipe Pardo’s deflected opener was wiped out by Theo Walcott, before a goalkeeping error gifted Olympiakos a 2-1 half-time lead. Alexis Sanchez made it 2-2 on 65 minutes, but Alfred Finnbogason struck almost immediately to restore the advantage. Arsenal dominated possession but failed to break down a deep defensive block.

Reaction: Arsene Wenger admitted: “We lost it on a lack of defensive concentration.”

February 2020: Arsenal 1-2 Olympiakos (AET)

Context: Europa League Round of 32, second leg. Arsenal held a 1-0 lead from the first leg and were expected to finish the job comfortably.

Key moments: Pape Abou Cisse’s header levelled the tie early in the second half. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s acrobatic volley in extra time made it 1-1 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate, but Youssef El-Arabi struck in the 119th minute to flip the tie. Aubameyang then missed a huge chance with the final kick.

Reaction: Mikel Arteta said: “It hurts a lot. We had a lot of intentions in this competition.” Olympiakos coach Pedro Martins called it “a historic night” and praised his side’s belief and discipline.

March 2021: Arsenal 0-1 Olympiakos

Context: Europa League Round of 16, second leg. Arsenal led 3-1 from the game in Greece and only needed to stay composed.

Key moments: Youssef El-Arabi’s deflected strike put Olympiakos ahead on the night. Despite Ousseynou Ba being sent off late on, Arsenal failed to take their chances and slipped to a third straight home defeat in the fixture. They still advanced 3-2 on aggregate, but the trend at the Emirates worsened.

Reaction: Arteta admitted: “We were nowhere near the levels we can perform.”

Can Olympiakos make it four Emirates wins in a row?

Arsenal are heavy favourites to win on Wednesday night and will field a strong XI as a new Champions League rule means the final placings in the league phase are even more important than last season.

But the Olympiakos side of 2025 should not be underestimated. Now under the management of Jose Luis Mendilibar, Olympiakos are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season, winning five games and drawing the other two.

However, their European campaign began poorly with a 0-0 home draw against Cypriot newcomers Pafos, who played with 10 men for more than an hour.
