Mikel Arteta has made a bold comparison between Arsenal teenager Max Dowman and a young Lionel Messi — and it is one that carries far more weight than a typical burst of managerial praise.
Elite managers are usually cautious when discussing prodigious young talents, preferring to play down potential rather than inflate expectations.
Arteta has taken the opposite approach. By openly likening Dowman’s early impact to that of a teenage Messi, the Arsenal boss has not only underlined how highly he rates the 16-year-old’s ability, but also suggested a deep belief in the youngster’s mentality and capacity to cope with pressure.
Comparisons of this magnitude are rarely made publicly, particularly about a player still balancing school commitments alongside senior football. The fact Arteta has chosen to do so speaks volumes about both Dowman’s talent and his character.
Mikel Arteta likens Max Dowman to a young Lionel Messi
Arteta was asked on Friday how Dowman compares to other elite prospects he has encountered during his playing and coaching career — a career that included time at Barcelona during the early years of Messi’s rise.
The Arsenal manager did not shy away from the comparison.
“Certainly one of the best,” Arteta said. “What he’s done with us at the age of 15, me personally, I haven’t seen it before.
“Only with a guy that used to play in Barcelona, but maybe not even that.
“He has a certain charisma as well and a personality that he doesn’t get overwhelmed, whether it’s by the situation or the stadium or the opposition. That’s a huge quality to have.
“Now it’s down to him and us to build an amazing career with him.”
Those comments are notable not only for the Messi reference itself, but for the qualities Arteta chose to emphasise. Rather than focusing solely on technical brilliance, he highlighted Dowman’s composure, personality and ability to perform without being overawed — traits that often separate elite prospects from fleeting hype.
Arteta also stressed the importance of managing Dowman’s development carefully.
“We have an amazing talent that, day by day, I think we need to shape because there’s so much there,” he added.
Did Mikel Arteta play with Lionel Messi?
Arteta’s comparison carries added authority because of his own background at Barcelona. The former midfielder came through La Masia and was on the club’s books when Messi arrived as a young teenager in 2000.
However, Arteta left Barcelona before Messi made his first-team debut at the age of 17, meaning the pair never played together competitively.
Even so, Arteta witnessed Messi’s early development from close range at one of the most demanding academies in world football. Few modern managers can claim that level of first-hand exposure to a generational talent at such a formative stage.
That experience helps explain why Arteta’s words have resonated so strongly. This is not a casual comparison, nor an attempt to generate hype. It is an assessment rooted in familiarity with what truly elite teenage potential looks like — and with the psychological demands that accompany it.

What Max Dowman said after signing pre-contract agreement with Arsenal
Arteta was speaking shortly after Dowman committed his long-term future to Arsenal by signing a pre-contract agreement that will see him sign professional terms when he turns 17 in December.
The attacking midfielder has been at Arsenal since the age of eight and has already broken multiple age-related records as he progressed rapidly through Hale End and into the first team.
After agreeing the deal, the England youth international spoke of his pride at extending his stay with the club.
“This means everything to me and my family,” Dowman said. “We all support Arsenal and I really feel like I belong here.
“I’d like to thank all my coaches, teammates and, most importantly, my family and friends, who have got me to where I am today.
“I’ve been at the club my whole life, so this really means a lot. There’s such a clear pathway here, players who have come through our academy, like Bukayo, Myles and Ethan, who all really inspire me.
“It’s amazing to have role models so close that have experienced the same thing that I have. I’m now so excited to continue to work hard with my development.”
Dowman, who only turned 16 on New Year’s Eve, has already made five first-team appearances for Arsenal, including one as a starter.
In September, he became the youngest player in UEFA Champions League history when he made a 20-minute cameo in a 3-0 win away to Slavia Prague — a result that contributed to Arsenal’s perfect record in the league phase of the competition.
Before Arteta’s comments, Dowman had already been the subject of growing fan excitement. In October, several Arsenal supporters even hailed him as better than Lamine Yamal after an impressive display in a 3-0 Carabao Cup win away at Port Vale.
As a consequence of that appearance, Dowman became the youngest starter in Arsenal’s history.
For now, Arsenal will continue to manage the teenager carefully. Dowman is currently recovering from an ankle injury, but with his future now secured, the club can plan long-term around a player their manager clearly believes is special.
