Cole Palmer could become Premier League Player of the Year if his Chelsea teammates can allow him the freedom he needs to thrive.
That is the view of former Blues attacker Pat Nevin who is a big fan of the England international.
Palmer burst onto the scene as a youngster at Manchester City before Chelsea snapped him up and their signing of the 23-year-old has so far proven to have been a masterstroke.
The playmaker has notched 43 goals and 29 assists from just 97 Chelsea appearances over the course of two years and has been the club’s main go-to star where creativity has been concerned.
Pat Nevin predicts Cole Palmer as Premier League Player of the Year
With new signings such as Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap now in the door alongside Estevao, Enzo Maresca is certainly not short of attacking options.
But ex-Scotland international Nevin believes it is Palmer who pulls all the strings at Stamford Bridge.
The 61-year-old former winger also is adamant that Palmer can win the coveted gong so long as he is helped by his teammates to be as good as he can be and show his true quality.
Asked by the BBC to predict his POTY winner, Nevin simply said: “Cole Palmer.”
He then added: “With quality new strikers ahead of him to find and Estevao already on his wavelength so he doesn’t have to bear the entire load, Cole will be freed.
“He also ended last season and has started this pre-season looking back to his best.”
Who Chelsea have signed in summer transfer window
Chelsea’s business – despite spending £240m in the market already – does not look like ending any time soon.
Maresca has been linked with a number of other players in this summer window who could further strengthen the squad if Chelsea are to challenge for the Premier League title among Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.
Manchester United attacker Alejandro Garnacho is on Chelsea’s wanted list after manager Ruben Amorim confirmed the Argentinian would be allowed to seek new opportunities this year.
Chelsea still want to add Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho
The fiery winger has been left out of his side’s pre-season plans and, while Chelsea would prefer a loan with an option to buy, United are reportedly determined to sell him permanently for an offer in the region of £30–50million.
Another player Maresca is keen to get a deal over the line for is Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig.
Bayern Munich fancied Simon but he agreed a move to London, with only a fee yet to be agreed between clubs.
The Dutchman joined RB Leipzig from PSG for £45m.
One player unlikely to stay at Chelsea is Nicolas Jackson who is wanted by Newcastle.
