Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has often made posts on social media that appear to call out the Spurs’ hierarchy – so we’re breaking down each of them after his latest outburst.
It’s been a tough season once again for Tottenham.
Spurs sit 14th in the table, with just one win in their last six Premier League games.
They lost 3-2 at Bournemouth on Wednesday, and fans are losing patience.
Supporters were already livid with their side’s performance, but after pictures of manager Thomas Frank drinking from an Arsenal cup emerged online, their anger has reached boiling point.
They aren’t the only ones fed up, though. Tottenham captain Romero took to social media in a now edited post on Instagram.
In the caption, he appeared to take a swipe at the club’s senior leadership, accusing them of “lies”.
The post has since been edited to remove such phrases, but it’s not the first time Romero has spoked publicly against the club.
Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero Posts Later Edited Rant
Following the loss at Bournemouth, Romero apologised on social media to the fans.
But he also mentioned that “other people” should speak out in “times like this”.
He added that those figures “only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies”.
Romero, 27, later deleted the post and re-uploaded with a near-identical caption, having removed the section criticising club figures.
“Apologies to all fans of you who follow us everywhere, who are always there and will continue to be,” Romero’s post said.
“We are responsible, there’s no doubt about that. But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.”
His words seemed to resonate with teammates, with fellow Spurs players Richarlison, Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons and Radu Dragusin adding comments below the post.
“At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well.
“We’ll stay here, working, sticking together and giving our all to turn things around. Especially at times like this, keeping quiet, working harder and moving forward all together, is part of football.”
What Has Romero Posted On Social Media In The Past?
While the edited post removed any shots fired at Tottenham’s senior management, Romero has never been shy of speaking out.
The Argentine defender also mentioned “the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist” in his tribute to former manager Ange Postecoglou following his sacking in June.
And in 2024, Romero called out the Tottenham board for a lack of investment.
He said: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.
“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it.”
And in the same year, he reposted a Spanish journalist’s criticism of how Tottenham handled their international players’ travel after a break.

Fans will no doubt be happy to see their captain stick his head above the parapet.
But calling out the board is a dangerous move for anyone employed at a football club.
Manchester United sacked manager Ruben Amorim this week after his explosive press conference that saw the Portuguese also take aim at his club’s management.
Romero therefore needs to be careful how he treads, unless he too wants to be shown the exit door.
