Will a return to Ligue 1 revive the fortunes of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Elye Wahi?

Eyle Wahi Nice loan

Eintracht Frankfurt striker Elye Wahi has agreed a loan move to OGC Nice until the end of the season.

It marks the latest twist in the peripatetic career of the 22-year-old Frenchman, who has struggled to establish himself at the Waldstadion since a £23m switch from Marseille last January.

Signed as a direct replacement for Omar Marmoush after the Egyptian forward’s move to Manchester City, Wahi failed to find the net in the Bundesliga, with his only goal coming in the German Cup against regional side FV Engers 07. His travails have only compounded seventh-placed Frankfurt’s travails following Hugo Ekitike’s summer departure to Liverpool.

Wahi has endured a strained relationship with head coach Dino Toppmöller, who omitted both him and fellow forward Michy Batshuayi from the match-day squad for November league games against Wolfsburg and Leipzig amid mutterings about expecting “a certain level of commitment”.

Elye Wahi: how Nice loanee’s career has been marred by instability

Wahi’s short career has been blighted by inconsistency, but the talent of a player once regarded as one of France’s brightest young prospects is not in doubt. The striker has previously attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, West Ham and Paris Saint‑Germain, and it is noteworthy that his loan agreement with Nice does not include an option to buy.

Frankfurt’s stance was made clear in the words of sporting director Markus Krösche, who expressed hope that the move would reignite Wahi’s belief in his own ability. It was a statement that smacked more of au revoir than goodbye.

“We wish him all the best for the coming months in Nice and, above all, hope he regains his confidence and self-belief,” said Krösche. “We will closely follow his progress and are convinced that a loan to an ambitious club is the most sensible solution for everyone in the current situation.”

Elye Wahi’s fluctuating fortunes in front of goal

Goals, the lifeblood of any striker’s self-belief, would certainly help, and Wahi will perhaps still be rueing a disallowed effort against Heidenheim in early November. “[He] really needed that goal for his confidence,” Toppmöller said at the time.

It is all a far cry from the striker’s teenage years, when his goalscoring exploits for Suresnes, an amateur club in suburban Paris, caught the attention of Caen, for whom he scored a remarkable 89 goals for the under-14 and -15 sides in the 2016/17 campaign. A first professional contract with Montpellier followed, and in December 2022 Wahi went on to emulate Kylian Mbappé by becoming only the second teenager in four decades to rack up 20 Ligue 1 goals.

The following August, the forward made a £30m move to Lens. But after scoring nine goals in 27 appearances – including one in an eye-catching Champions League performance against Arsenal – the restless striker upped sticks for Marseille a year later, enticed by the opportunity to work under Roberto De Zerbi and fill the shoes of the Saudi-bound Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It did not quite work out that way. After struggling to make an impression, the striker was sold to Frankfurt in the next window.

Elye Wahi: ‘I’ll tell you frankly, I was a little disappointed’

“I’ll tell you frankly, I was a little disappointed,” he later told L’Equipe. “I didn’t think it would end so quickly. When you arrive at a club, you don’t want to leave after six months. We had to find a new environment very quickly. We tried to find the best solution. For me, that was Frankfurt.

“That’s the life of a big club. You have to prove your worth right away. Unfortunately, they didn’t give me a chance, but that’s OK. Now I want to take the time to develop little by little.”

There can be little doubt that a period of stability would benefit a player with a reputation for controversy. Wahi he will now hope to revive his fortunes under former Southampton and Leicester City manager Claude Puel, who took up the reins at the Allianz Riviera in late December, following the dismissal of Franck Haise.

Nice finished fourth in Ligue 1 last term but are currently languishing in 13th place following a desperate run of form that included nine straight defeats before a 2-1 Coupe de France win over second-tier Saint-Etienne just before Christmas. They last won a league game in late October and also sit bottom of the Europa League with six defeats from six games.

Florian Maurice, the Mediterranean club’s sporting director, expressed optimism that Wahi could help to alter Nice’s downward trajectory.

Nice hail Elye Wahi as ‘a real handful for opposition defenders’

“Elye corresponds perfectly to what we are looking for,” said Maurice. “He is a powerful forward, a real handful for opposition defenders, and excellent in front of goal. Despite his young age, he has already acquired great experience at the highest level. This loan deal reflects our desire to reinforce the playing squad.”

Wahi, who could make his club debut in the Coupe de France at Nantes next weekend, appears eager to make the most of his latest opportunity.

“It’s an historic club, with very passionate supporters,” he said. “I could feel the confidence of the coach and the directors. I am here to work hard, to help the team and give my absolute maximum every match.”
