Erling Haaland Discusses Transfer Future Amid Real Madrid Interest

Erling haaland transfer

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has opened up on future transfer possibilities, and explained what could make him leave the Etihad.

Erling Haaland has become the most dominant forward in world football since arriving at Manchester City in 2022.

With 144 goals in 166 matches, multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League already to his name, his impact is unquestionable.

Haaland’s Premier League century of goals – achieved against Fulham last week – made him the fastest player in history to reach that milestone after breaking Alan Shearer’s long-standing record.

Yet despite signing a contract until 2034, the Norwegian has admitted his time at City may not last forever.

Manchester City’s over-reliance on Haaland has already caused problems when he has been unavailable.

So hearing their star man talk about one day leaving the club may set alarm bells ringing around the Etihad.

Erling Haaland Discusses Future Transfer Possibilities

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Haaland discussed the relentless expectations that come with being Manchester City’s No. 9.

“I’m the striker of City. I have to score goals. If not, they have to replace me,” He admitted.

“If I’m not delivering the goals and the things they need, they have to replace me. So there is a lot of pressure on me to deliver and to do the job.”

The frank admission of how disposable even the world’s best players are is perhaps surprising.

But it also reflects City’s ruthless internal standards.

World Cup winner Julian Alvarez was allowed to leave for Atlético Madrid in 2024 when it became clear that Haaland was the undisputed starter for Pep Guardiola.

City do not wait for their stars to decline, and will act ruthlessly if a player no longer delivers – no matter who they are.

What Could Make Erling Haaland Leave Manchester City?

Despite his comments, Haaland’s position at City remains absolutely rock-solid.

His output has been remarkable, with 100 Premier League goals in 111 matches.

But there remain a number of scenarios that could cause him to leave the club.

Haaland has been clear that Guardiola’s influence was a major factor in him joining City.

He previously said “Pep was a big reason why I came to City,” and he is extremely close with the Argentine boss.

Pep’s contract runs until 2027, and he has openly said he is unsure how long he will stay beyond that.

If he leaves, and especially if City enter a transitional period, Haaland may be tempted to leave.

On top of this, Haaland has won everything bar the EFL Cup while at City.

There may come a time when he wants to test himself in other leagues, and cement his place as an all-time great.

His father, former City star Alf-Inge Haaland, previously said: “Erling wants to test his abilities in all leagues. Two and a half years in Germany, England, then Spain, Italy, France.”

And there is of course the looming possibility of sanctions for City’s 115 financial charges.

Although unlikely, the club could be forced into selling their main man in order to balance the books and offset any penalties.

Real Madrid Retain Long-Term Interest In Haaland Transfer

In terms of future destinations, no club has been more consistently talked about that Real Madrid.

Past reports have suggested his old contract even included a release clause that “only Real Madrid” could activate – though this was removed when he signed his 2025 extension.

Nevertheless, Madrid are probably the biggest club on earth, and remain the ultimate pull for any footballer.

Guardiola has also addressed this interest, saying: “Tell me one club for which it wouldn’t be a dream to have Erling Haaland.”

And Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, quipped: “Do you think Haaland will ever be free from rumours about Real Madrid? Never.”

Erling haaland transfer

Erling Haaland has long been admired by Real Madrid.

But for now, a move remains highly unlikely.

The length of his contract – a Premier League record – means any transfer would cost an unimaginable figure.

Haaland remains happy and committed to City, with the club keen to keep him as long as possible.

But the player’s admission that “If I don’t score, City have to replace me” offer a reminder of how cut-throat elite football is.
